Day 1 Results
GOLDEN, Colo. - Four program records fell as Colorado School of Mines turned in big performance after big performance on the first day of the Mines Winter Classic & Multi.
Multi-eventer
Avery Wright started and ended her day with records in 60m hurdles and pentathlon,
Lexye Wood reset her indoor long jump record, and
Hunter Potrykus grabbed the indoor pole vault mark to lead the Orediggers. Mines' distance squad, most of whom were making their season debuts, also turned in impressive at-altitude results in the 3,000m and distance medley relay, with
Loic Scomparin setting the Steinhauer Fieldhouse record in the 3K.
Wright won the pentathlon with a point total of 3,698, the best in the RMAC and ninth-best in Division II this season. She surpassed Kayla Johnson's 2014 record of 3,478 and set a nearly 300-point personal best; wrapped up in her day was the new Mines record in the 60m hurdles at 8.92 seconds, a hundreth below Erin Beach's 2011 time of 8.93. Wright also recorded new PRs in the shot put (12.14m) and indoor long jump (5.51m) along with strong high jump (1.56m) and 800m (2:28.76) performances.
Wood surpassed her own indoor long jump record by two centimeters to win the event in 6.04m, only three centimeters off her all-conditions best as she set the new NCAA #5 and RMAC #2 mark. Potrykus then surpassed his previous indoor personal best of 5.21m, and Connor McLean's record of 5.26m, with his 5.30m clearance to win the pole vault. Potrykus opened at 4.85m, then cleared 5.05m and immediately elevated to 5.30m where he made it on his second attempt.
Distance night didn't disappoint as Scomparin and
Zoe Baker each won their respective 3,000m races. Scomparin surged to an 8:19.06 finish, snapping former teammate
Dillon Powell's fieldhouse record after Powell paced out the first 2K of the race. That should slot in as the #2 performance in D-II this season, and Scomparin wasn't alone as Mines took the top nine slots.
Duncan Fuehne (8:22.47),
Paul Knight (8:26.04),
John O'Malley (8:26.70),
Dawson Gunn (8:28.34),
Daniel Appleford (8:32.22),
Andrew Kaye (8:32.85),
Matt Mettler (8:43.20), and
Max Bonenberger (8:48.84) rounded out the top nine.
It was a similar story in the women's race as
Zoe Baker led four Orediggers in the top five spots with her 9:59.29 win.
Holly Moser was third in 10:03.13 with
Molly Maksin fourth (10:04.21) and
Margaux Basart fifth (10:05.70);
Josie Mejia (10:40.78),
Ashleigh Loe (10:42.79), and
Callen Nash (10:50.85) also made their season debuts finishing ninth through 11th, respectively.
Imani Fernandez-Gorbea,
Grace Galvin,
Aryelle Wright, and
Riley McGrath put together an impressive 11:56.53 DMR time - the fastest at-elevation run in program history - as they pushed with UCCS to what should convert to the #3 time in D-II this season.
Brody Welch and
Franklin Rambo went 1-2 in the shot put, tying at 15.08m with Welch going ahead on a better second throw of 15.05m. It marked a big improvement for Rambo, whose previous collegiate best was 13.70m earlier this season at the Alumni Classic.
Kitt Rupar also had a good day in the women's shot put, throwing 12.96m for third.
Potrykus wasn't the only Oredigger with a pole vault PR as
Noah Kelly hit a new best for the second straight week finishing second at 4.95m.
Shane Conley also improved his best to tie for third at 4.70m with
Aidan Bennett, and
Kai Miller was fifth (4.55m) with
Jackson Wray seventh (4.40m).
Hannah Miller led a top-three sweep on the women's side with a 3.93m best bar ahead of
Avery Herbold (3.78m) and
Ava Kowalski (3.63m), with
Madeline Obuchowski sixth (3.33m).
Claire Kintzley was 12th in the long jump at 5.14m.
The Winter Classic concludes Saturday starting at 9 a.m., live on the RMAC Network.
