Mines Club Women's Rugby falls to DI Colorado Mesa University

10/10/2024 11:51:00 AM

Colorado School of Mines Club Women's Rugby made the drive down to Grand Junction to face the DI Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. The match started off with the Orediggers and Mavericks both playing solid defense. With a lot of ball turnover and strong defense, there was minimal scoring initially. In transition, Mesa drew first blood as the winger sped around the outside to score. This created momentum from the Mavericks as they would score another time to make the score, 14 - 0. With minimal time left in the first half of the match, Mines finally struck back with a try from Kaylyn Courtney. At half time, the score was 5 - 14, in favor of the Mavericks.

Mines started off the second half strong to draw Mesa in as Piper Lee scored making it a two point game. Mesa answered with another try from their wing off of the edge so there was a seven point difference. Our Orediggers fought hard and McKenzie Williams scored a try as Piper Lee converted her kick to make it, 19 - 19. Mesa would pull back into the lead with a try, but Kaylyn Courtney refused to quick and tied the match back up. As the game was 26 - 26 and time was dwindling down, Mines was bested on a hat trick from the Mesa wing to finish the game, 26 - 33.

Despite being handed their first loss of the season, the Orediggers played a great game against a competitive DI club team. There were plenty of highlights and potential seen during this challenging match. Keep supporting Mines Club Women's Rugby as they prepare to have a great 15s season!
