Three-Point Shooting Pushes Angelo State Past Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – Above average three-pointer shooting by Angelo State on Friday afternoon pushed the visiting Rambelles to a 69-59 win against the Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team at Lockridge Arena.

Despite the Rambelles' long-range outburst, the Orediggers still boasted multiple standout players. Jenna Siebert led the way with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Emma Sixta notched 14 points, six assists, three rebounds, one block, and one steal. Audrey Beaty, whose game was shortened by an injury, put up 11 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and tallied two steals and a block in just 23 minutes of action. Also notable for the home team was Jospehine Howery who provided four points, four rebounds, three assists, and one block. Majik Esquivel of ASU led all players with 20 points.

Angelo State (7-3) entered the game shooting just 25 percent from three-point range for the season. The Rambelles converted at nearly 40 percent on Friday with 11 makes on 29 attempts. Mines (3-9) shot 17 percent from behind the arc, but dominated in the post. The Orediggers scored 36 points in the paint compared to 22 points in the paint for the visitors. Every other statistical category was virtually even with minimal margins in rebounding, turnovers, and assists. Angelo State only missed one of its 11 free throws. Mines converted six of its eight opportunities at the charity stripe.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first three quarters of action provided fans at Lockridge Arena with fast-paced, high-quality, entertaining basketball. In the opening period, Mines drained two of its first three long-range shots and took an 8-2 lead. Two ties and three lead changes later, the first quarter had come to an end and Angelo State owned a 21-18 lead after a last-second, three-point heave found the bottom of the night. Despite the deficit, Beaty had already scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds. Two more ties and four more lead changes filled the next 10 minutes of action as Siebert poured in 10 more points for the Orediggers. However, three more three-pointers for ASU gave the Rambelles a 36-34, halftime lead.

After the break, Angelo State put together a 7-0 run which was actually a 9-1 surge when going back to the first half. Even so, Mines hung tough with Sixta scoring five and Siebert adding four in the period. A 6-0, ASU run early in the fourth quarter provided the visitors with separation on the scoreboard. However, the Orediggers used their own 6-0 run to keep their deficit in single digits. Even with 2:14 to play, Mines only trailed by six points thanks to a wing three-pointer off the hand of Sixta. In the end, the home team was forced to foul, the Rambelles converted at the line, and the Orediggers could not find the bottom of the basket. Free throws for ASU in the final 10 seconds made the double-digit margin for the game.
