WHAT TO WATCH - GOLDEN
Friday at the Mines Alumni Classic will start off with the women's pentathlon at noon, with RMAC heptathlon champion
Avery Wright and
Lisa Sutherland entered, and
Claire Kintzley starts her season with the long jump also at noon. A packed Oredigger crew in the pole vault gets going with the women's event at 4:30 p.m., with five Mines women and six men set to go. Friday closes with the shot put (5:30 p.m.) highlighted by 2024 outdoor all-American
Kitt Rupar along with
Jennifer Jarnagin,
Holden Murphy, and
Franklin Rambo.Â
Saturday's field schedule has just one event with Mines entrants, the weight throw at 11 a.m., with the shot putters plus
Abbi Gillespie taking part. On the track starting at 2 p.m., Mines has plenty of early-season entries including
Grace Galvin and
Aani Hardesty in the 400m (3:15 p.m.),,
Avary Catchings and
Tim Thompson in the 800m (4:15 p.m.), and four hurdlers (3:45 p.m.) with
Allison Comer in the women's race and
Coulton Chan,
Rhett Cullers, and
Nick Stade in the men's.
Jeremiah Vaille, coming off his all-America run two weeks ago at the NCAA cross country championships, will run the 5,000m to close the meet at 5 p.m.
WHAT TO WATCH - BOSTON
Nine Oredigger distance runners are headed to the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener at BU fresh off cross country season, set to compete in four events on one of the world's fastest tracks.
Alberto Campa and
Loic Scomparin will run the men's 3,000m (3:10 p.m. ET) with
Daniel Appleford and
Braden Struhs set for the men's 5,000m (6:15 p.m.);
Imani Fernandez-Gorbea will compete in the women's mile (10:50 a.m. ET), with
Margaux Basart,
Emily LaMena,
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge, and Grace Strongmen the women's 5,000m (4:10 p.m. ET).
WHO'S BACK
Mines returns 11 all-Americans from the 2024 track & field season, with another deep distance group led by 12-time all-American
Loic Scomparin for the men and 2024 NCAA cross country bronze medalist
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge for the women.
Logan Bocovich,
Ethan Grolnic,
Paul Knight,
Dawson Gunn,
Jeremiah Vaille,
Alberto Campa,
Imani Fernandez-Gorbea, and
Margaux Basart have each been all-Americans on the track or the grass in their careers to headline Mines' long-distance squad. Pole vault has also been a strength for Mines over the last decade and it should be no different in 2025 led by three-time all-American
Hunter Potrykus, along with 2024 NCAA outdoor qualifiers
Noah Kelly,
Ava Kowalski, and
Dale Thompson.
Everett Delate was on the podium both indoors and outdoors in the 60m and 110m hurdles last year, while half of Mines' all-America women's DMR returns in
Grace Galvin and Fernandez-Gorbea.
Kitt Rupar had a breakout spring to podium in both the shot put and discus at NCAA outdoors, leading one of Mines' strongest returning throws groups in recent years.
WHO'S NEW
Mines has a trio of impact transfers joining the program with pole vaulter
Hayley Rayburn, thrower
Holden Murphy, and multi-eventer
Nick Stade. Rayburn set Arizona State's vault record and was an NCAA regional qualifier as she joins the Orediggers as a graduate transfer, while Murphy was an NCAA Division III all-American last year at Loras in both the weight throw and discus, and is also a grad transfer. Stade, a junior, returns to his home state from D-III Lewis & Clark where he set multiple program records in the multis. The Orediggers also welcome a large 36-member freshman class - 25 men and 11 women - that is heavy on adding men's sprinters and middle distance and women's pole vault and distance.Â
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE, PART I
Mines men's cross country lifted its fourth NCAA Division II national championship since 2015 on Nov. 23, coming back in the final two kilometers to edge Wingate in a thrilling race in Sacramento.
Logan Bocovich,
Loic Scomparin, and
Ethan Grolnic finished 7-8-9 while
Paul Knight was 21st and
Dawson Gunn 25th to beat the Bulldogs by three points. The women placed fifth led by
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge, whose third-place individual run marked the best finish ever by an Oredigger woman.
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE, PART II
The Mines indoor program made history in 2023-24 by winning both the RMAC men's and women's championships, the first time in program history they have won both at the same time. It was the second consecutive title for the women and the third since 2016 for the men.Â
RECORD SETTERS
The 2024-25 Oredigger squad includes nine active program recordholders. For the men,
Loic Scomparin (3K),
Everett Delate (60H), and
Hunter Potrykus (PV) are all back, while
Avery Wright (60H and pentathlon) and
Margaux Basart (3K) have their names atop the women's indoor record book. Three more women -
Allison Comer (400H),
Claire Kintzley (TJ), and
Kitt Rupar (SP) - look forward to strong indoor seasons after they broke outdoor records last spring, with Wright adding the outdoor heptathlon record as well.
LOOKING AHEAD
This weekend will be Mines' only indoor action before the new year; they will break for finals and the holidays and return Jan. 11 at the Potts Indoor Invitational in Boulder.
