SAN MARCOS, Calif. –
Luke Folsom hit the go-ahead home run and
Jackson Bakovich tossed over four innings of shutout relief to give the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team a 4-2 win at Cal State San Marcos on Friday afternoon.
Folsom's home run was his only hit of the day. He officially finished 1-for-1 thanks to three walks and added one run with two RBI to his resume. Elsewhere on offense,
Jackson Woolwine finished 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI thanks to a home run.
Wayne Moeck and
Canon Humphreys both scored.
Mason Andrews,
I-Ly Hsue,
Keene Tanaka and Humphreys all notched one hit each.
On the mound, Folsom started the game but took no decision after 4.0 innings featuring two runs on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Bakovich (1-1) earned the win after throwing 4.1 innings of no-hit, shutout relief. He finished the game touting three strikeouts and one walk.
Seaver Newby bridged the gap between Folsom and Bakovich by recording two outs. Newby gave up no runs on no hits and walked one batter.
Mines (2-5) won its second straight game by holding Cal State San Marcos (0-3) to three hits across nine innings. Only one of the Cougars' hits went for extra bases. The Orediggers scored their four runs on seven hits while overcoming three errors in the field. Overall, Mines' pitching staff combined for six strikeouts compared to four walks and three hits which led to two earned runs. For CSUSM, the pitchers struck out nine and walked six. Cal State San Marcos also had one fielding error.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Woolwine was the very first batter of the game and the series. He worked the count to two balls and one strike before sending a laser over the left-field fence. There were no more hits in the game until the bottom of the third inning, but Folsom worked out of the leadoff double with two fly balls and a strikeout. Eventually, in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cal State San Marcos used two hits and a walk to plate to runs. That gave the home team a 2-1 lead, but Mines immediately tied it 2-2 in the top of the fifth. A Cougars error and a passed ball allowed Moeck to score and knot the game.
There was one total hit across the bottom of the fifth and all of the sixth frame. Then, in the top of the seventh, Humphreys led off with a single. Two straight outs made the hit seem in vain, but then Folsom smacked a two-run bomb to give the Orediggers a 2-0 lead. Bakovich had already come out of the bullpen in the bottom of the fifth inning. He retired CSUSM in order in the home half of the seventh, and worked through an error in the eighth to keep it 4-2. In the bottom of the ninth, Bakovich hit a batter to start the inning, but a strikeout and a groundball double play from Humphreys to
Ben Leiphart closed out the win.
