Pair of Walk-Offs Sting Mines at Emporia State

EMPORIA, Kan. – The Colorado School of Mines Baseball team was walked off twice on Friday at Emporia State, falling 3-2 in game one and 5-4 in an eleven-inning game two.

Luke Folsom produced at the plate in both games, finishing the day hitting .375 with one run and two RBI. Trent Nielsen provided the pop as he went 2-for-4 in game two with a home run and a double leading to two runs and one RBI. Jackson Woolwine, Keene Tanaka, and Mason Andrews all notched multiple hits on the day as well. In the slugging department, Tyler Hummel matched Nielsen's double and Woolwine smacked a triple. Woolwine, Canon Humphreys, Wayne Moeck and Andrews also stole one base apiece.

On the mound, Ben Schoneman (0-1) started game one and tossed 6.2 innings before wearing the loss. He struck out five batters and walked two while giving up three runs on four hits. Only one of those hits went for extra bases. Luke Folsom started game two but did not factor in the decision. He lasted 5.0 innings, struck out six hitters, walked just one hitter and surrendered only two runs (one earned) on three hits. Jackson Bakovich came out of the bullpen for 2.0 innings of work. Marcus Lee was brilliant across 3.0 innings. He gave up just one run on two hits while striking out three and walking one. Matthew Dobberthien (0-1) took the loss. Seaver Newby also appeared in relief.

Mines (0-4) was limited to three hits in the series opener, but exploded for 10 in game two. On the other side, Emporia State (4-1) had just four hits on the front end and seven in the nightcap. The Orediggers committed three errors in game two, their first defensive miscues of the season. Furthermore, Mines' pitching staff combined to strike out 20 batters across two games compared to five walks. The Hornets hurlers produced 13 strikeouts and seven walks. Tanner Dawe (1-0) was ESU's winner in game one and Hayden Baumwart earned the decision to end the day.

GAME ONE: Emporia State 3, Mines 2
For a third straight game, the Orediggers put runs on the scoreboard first and it happened in the first frame. Woolwine was hit by a pitch and stole second base. Eventually, Folsom provided a two-out single up the middle and brought Woolwine in to score for a 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the second inning before a pitcher's duel ensued. Stacked zeroes in the third, fourth, and fifth innings put the pressure on both teams.

Mines broke the silence in the top of the sixth frame thanks to Moeck's sacrifice fly which plated Tanaka. The visitors carried their 2-1 lead into the final inning and struck out the first two ESU batters to come to the plate. However, the home team ground out a pair of two-out runs to complete the comeback and the walk-off win on a walk, a single, and a double.

GAME TWO: Emporia State 5, Mines 4 (11 innings)
Mines scored first again. The strike also came in the first inning. Furthermore, Folsom had the RBI which provided the Orediggers a 1-0 lead. Moeck was the one to touch the plate. Emporia State crinkled the proverbial carbon copy by scoring in the first and second frames for a 2-1 advantage. Folsom and the visiting defense settled in for three straight shutout innings. Meanwhile, Tanaka rallied Mines to a 3-2 lead by driving in Nielsen and Folsom in the fourth. Nielsen homered in the sixth and extended the Oredigger advantage to 4-2. Unfortunately for Mines, the Hornets scored one run in the sixth inning and one run in the seventh inning to force extra action. A two-out single in the bottom of the 11th handed the visitors their second loss of the day.
