GOLDEN, Colo. – High winds made a large impact on Saturday at Jim Darden Field as the Colorado School of Mines Baseball team started its doubleheader against Adams State with an 11-5 loss, but couldn't finish the twin bill due to the blustery conditions.
Game two of the doubleheader was postponed to Sunday as decided by the umpires with mutual consent from both coaches. Game one featured two hits from
Luke Folsom including one double, and seven strikeouts on the mound by
Alex Honeyman (4-3). The later eventually took the loss despite fanning seven batters and walking just one.
Jackson Bakovich also appeared out of the bullpen. Back on offense,
Jackson Woolwine scored two runs while Folsom,
Ben Leiphart, and
Alex Dunagan all came across the plate.
Evan Bilter tallied two RBI. Dunagan,
Tyler Pina, and
Grant Johnson notched one RBI apiece. Connor Murray was the winning pitcher for Adams State.
Mines (18-14, 11-7 RMAC) batted just .250 as a team. The Grizzlies (15-17, 10-4 RMAC) scored their 11 runs on 13 hits, but only had one double. There were a total of five errors in the game, but no home runs despite the wind howling out towards left field. Also notable were three stolen bases by the Orediggers along with two hit batters. Mines left nine runners on base compared to six stranded by Adams State.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Early action in Saturday's contest hinted at a pitchers' duel. Both teams were retired in order in the first inning, and one hit apiece in the second inning yielded zero runs. Eventually, the prospect of a pitching battle and high-level defense was thrown to the wayside in the third. Adams State started the frame with four runs on four hits with two Oredigger errors. Only one of the four hits was sent into the outfield. Mines answered in the home half by scoring one run on three hits, but left two on base.
Stacked zeroes on the scoreboard in the fourth and fifth frames carried ASU's 4-1 lead into the sixth inning. There, the visitors stacked four more runs on three hits and one error. That made the score 8-1 in favor of the Grizzlies before a pair of sacrifice flies cut Adams State's lead to 8-3. Unfortunately for Mines, ASU kept it rolling and added three runs to its total in the seventh. The Orediggers' last chance on offense yielded two runs that were far too little too late.
