FRIDAY'S FIRST PITCH
Mines baseball is going all-out for its last home games of the regular season. On Friday, Colorado School of Mines Director of Athletics David Hansburg will throw out the ceremonial first pitch before the series opener. The first pitch from the department leader will air live on the RMAC Network, and is currently scheduled for 2:55 p.m. Hansburg has led Mines Athletics since 2013, guiding the Orediggers to the most successful era in the history of the department. In the last five years alone, including the 2023-24 school year, Hansburg has overseen a department that has brought home a total of 29 RMAC titles and two national championships. He was also at the helm in 2018 and 2019 when Mines baseball earned bids to its first two NCAA tournaments.

WEATHER FORECAST
The weather on Friday looks to be nearly perfect for a pair of baseball games. The daytime high is set at 68 degrees with mostly-sunny skies and breezes ranging from 10-15 MPH. Saturday will start with clear skies, but clouds and the potential for scattered showers will move in during the afternoon. As with any spring weekend in Colorado, fans planning to attend the games should bring sunscreen, layers, and probably a rain jacket.

LAST TIME OUT
It's a short turnaround for Mines after playing a doubleheader on Sunday and another on Monday at MSU Denver. The Orediggers took the first two games, winning 18-6 and 7-6 with the later coming in extra innings. On Monday, the Roadrunners started the day with a 9-4 win to avoid the sweep. In the end, Mines prevailed and won the series with a 13-3 trouncing of MSU Denver in the finale. Winning pitchers for the Orediggers included Luke Folsom (game one), Jackson Bakovich (game two), and Alex Honeyman (game four). Tyler Pina led the performances at the plate. He finished the series batting .750 in three games with three runs on six hits including two doubles and three home runs with eight RBI. Keene Tanaka and Luke Folsom both his over .500 as well and Folsom scored five runs with eight RBI on two doubles and a home run. Mason Andrews hit two home runs in the series and scored seven times. Jackson Woolwine, I-Ly Hsue, and Canon Humphreys added long balls as well. Also notable were seven runs and four doubles from Woolwine, 10 combined runs from Hsue and Nielsen, and six RBI for Humphreys. The Oredigger defense only committed a total of three errors across three games and 33.0 innings.

CLINCHED
Mines' series win at MSU Denver, combined with other results around the league, clinched the Orediggers a berth in the 2024 RMAC Baseball Tournament. While a majority of the seeding is up in the air, the location of the tournament will once again be Grand Junction, Colo., after Colorado Mesa clinched its 12th straight conference title. Mathematically, Regis can tie the Mavericks' RMAC record, but CMU holds the tiebreaker. Seeding scenarios will be outlined below. The 2024 RMAC Baseball Tournament begins Wednesday, May 8, and runs through Saturday, May 11. Additional information on the conference postseason will be available next week at www.minesathletics.com.
SEEDING SCENARIOS
Just one weekend remains in the regular season, and scenarios for seeding and qualifying for the six-team conference tournament remain extremely unclear. Here's what is clear. Colorado Mesa (32-14, 22-6 RMAC) is the top seed and host. Mines (24-18, 17-11 RMAC), Regis (27-18-1, 18-10 RMAC), Adams State (22-24, 17-11 RMAC), and MSU Denver (28-22, 19-13 RMAC) have all cemented a spot in the bracket. CSU Pueblo (26-19, 15-13 RMAC) and UCCS (15-29, 12-16 RMAC) have not clinched a spot and are battling for the final berth. New Mexico Highlands (8-38, 4-24 RMAC) and Colorado Christian (6-39, 4-24 RMAC) have been mathematically eliminated from postseason contention. The current RMAC standings feature Colorado Mesa at #1, Regis #2, Mines and Adams State tied for #3, MSU Denver #5, CSU Pueblo #6, and UCCS #7. Check the next section for weekend matchups and actual scenarios.

AROUND THE RMAC
As stated in the previous section, the scenarios are unclear and the standings are condensed. Colorado Mesa has already wrapped up the #1 seed. The Mavericks close the regular season at Adams State starting on Thursday night and will look to solidify their regional standing for a berth in the NCAA tournament while ASU chases a higher seed. Regis plays at CSU Pueblo on Friday and Saturday. The ThunderWolves need at least two wins to punch their RMAC tournament ticket and eliminate UCCS from the postseason. Four wins for Regis and a single Mines loss to UCCS would give the Rangers the #2 seed. If you're reading this, you already know that Mines is playing UCCS. Three Oredigger wins would end the Mountain Lions' season, as would two Mines victories and a CSU Pueblo win. Still tracking? MSU Denver has its bye week, putting the Roadrunners' seeding at the mercy of everyone else in the league. Ironically, the two teams that cannot make the league's postseason end their respective seasons against each other in New Mexico.

TIEBREAKERS
The first criteria for RMAC tournament seeding listed in the conference manual is "won-lost conference record." The second criteria is "head-to-head competition in regular season conference play." Those two are pretty straight forward. The third criteria is "performance indicator." That is where things get confusing and a path the author will not follow. With that in mind, if Mines ties with Regis in the conference standings, the tiebreaker would be performance indicator since the Orediggers and Rangers split their series in the regular season. The same is true if Mines ties with Adams State. The Orediggers won their series against MSU Denver and CSU Pueblo, giving them the tiebreaker against those two squads. Mines and UCCS cannot tie in the standings since they are separated by more than four games. So there you have it, clear as mud.

REGIONAL RANKINGS
On Wednesday, the second edition of the NCAA South Central Regional rankings were released. This iteration was the first featuring teams in ranked order, and Mines appeared at #8 on the list. For those who don't know, the NCAA Regional rankings are what determines the teams that qualify for the national postseason – nothing else. The South Central Region features a six-team bracket. This means, as of Wednesday, the Orediggers are on the outside looking in at the NCAA tournament. However, two weeks (including the conference tournament) remain for Mines to improve its standing. Additionally, two of the six spots will be claimed by the conference tournament champions (automatic qualifiers) from the Lone Star Conference and RMAC. The regional rankings have a variety of factors/criteria including, but not limited to, record against NCAA Division II opponents, in-region record, Rating Percentage Index (RPI), strength of schedule, head-to-head record, common opponents, and performance indicator. Needless to say, a lot can change in two weeks. At the end of the day, the Orediggers can remove all doubt and just win the RMAC tournament in Grand Junction.

SENIORS
There are 13 Orediggers whose respective careers will be honored and celebrated this weekend. The list includes Jackson Bakovich, Chandler Cole, Luke Folsom, Rodney Gregg, I-Ly Hsue, Collin Kringlen, Marcus Lee, Henry Novicki, Nic Roma, Ben Schoneman, Weston Siefken, Keene Tanaka, and Brady Veltien. Check out a brief profile of each senior below.

JACKSON BAKOVICH
A true freshman in the spring of 2020 who took a redshirt before playing fulltime starting in 2021. After dabbling as a utility player, Bakovich moved to the bullpen as a reliever. Over the last four seasons, Bakovich has gone 7-5 in 39 appearances – all in relief – with a 7.31 career ERA thanks to 68 strikeouts compared to 20 walks in 76.1 innings of work. With six wins in 2024, the Fort Collins, Colo., native is tied for #8 in the program record book. He also sprinkled four at-bats across the 2021 and 2022 seasons while also fielding 1.000 at second base. Bakovich has been named to the RMAC Academic Honor Roll three times, earned the 2023 D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award, and won RMAC Pitcher of the Week earlier this season. He already has his bachelor's degree from Mines in mechanical engineering and will receive a master's degree in computer science in less than a week. The graduate of Loveland High School has secured a job as a software engineer at Lockheed Martin.

CHANDLER COLE
Chandler Cole joined the Orediggers in the fall of 2020 by way of Spring Branch, Texas, and Smithson Valley High School. After redshirting his freshman season, Cole served as a backup catcher for the Orediggers before transitioning to the bullpen as a relief pitcher. The Texan had six at-bats in 2022 and recorded one run and a double while fielding 1.000. He came out of the bullpen twice in 2023 and touts a career ERA of 0.00 with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Despite limited action, Cole has become widely-known as the best "chirper" in the RMAC and possible the region, unofficially earning all-conference honors at the position. His classy, but cutting, quips from the dugout towards the opposition have provided a high-level psychological impact which has led to numerous walks, extra-base hits and runs scored. Cole appeared on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll in 2022 and 2023 while also earning the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2023. He will graduate from Mines next week with a degree in mechanical engineering.

LUKE FOLSOM

Over the last four years, he has accumulated 132 runs on 198 hits with 57 doubles, two triples, and 28 home runs with 149 RBI while hitting .352 in 166 games. On the mound, Folsom owns a career record of 7-9 with a 7.78 ERA. The Littleton, Colo., native has struck out 107 batters and walked 52 in 34 appearances including 30 starts for a total of 130.2 innings. He was voted NCBWA Third-Team All-America and D2CCA Honorable Mention All-America as a utility player in 2022 while also earning multiple all-region awards and Second-Team All-RMAC at designated hitter. Included among numerous weekly awards is NCBWA National and Regional Hitter of the Week. He's also a two-time CSC Academic All-District team member and a CSC First-Team Academic All-American. The Columbine High School graduate currently appears in the program record book more than 20 times and holds the Mines record for doubles in a game and in a season while ranking #2 for all-time doubles as an Oredigger. We could say more, but it would take a while. Folsom will graduate from Mines next week with a degree in mechanical engineering. He is set to work fulltime at Tri-State Generation and Transmission as a transmission line engineer.

RODNEY GREGG
A member of the team since the fall of 2019, Rodney Gregg pitched for the Orediggers for three seasons before medically retiring from baseball. In three fulltime seasons, Gregg amassed a career record of 6-1 with a 5.11 ERA, going 5-0 overall his last two campaigns. He struck out 37 batters and walked 15 in 37 appearances including one start for a total of 61.2 innings. Gregg won NCBWA Regional Pitcher of the Week and RMAC Pitcher of the Week in 2021 after making three appearances in four days which resulted in one earned run across 9.2 innings with six strikeouts and a 1-0 record. Since retiring from playing, the Peyton, Colo., native served as an assistant coach for Mines as well. He will graduate from Mines next week with a degree in civil engineering.

He has appeared on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll two times as well. The graduate of Lake Washington High School appears multiple times in the program record book including top-10 rankings in career runs, career doubles, career stolen bases, and career total bases. Hsue already owns a bachelor's degree from Mines in mechanical engineering. He will receive his master's degree in Additive Manufacturing next week.

COLLIN KRINGLEN
Collin Kringlen is a native of Broomfield, Colo., and graduated from Holy Family High School. He was a member of the baseball team from the fall of 2019 until retiring from playing fulltime after the 2023 season. After transitioning from pitcher to position player, Kringlen finished his career as a .500 hitter with an overall slugging percentage of 1.000. He recorded his first collegiate hit in his first collegiate at-bat, notching a double and scoring a run against New Mexico Highlands. Kringlen also earned RMAC Academic Honor Roll status three times and brought home the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2023 as well. He earned his bachelor's degree from Mines in electrical engineering last May and recently submitted his thesis in pursuit of a master's degree from Mines in electrical engineering.

MARCUS LEE
Marcus Lee is a five-year member of the Oredigger baseball team. After redshirting the spring of 2020, Lee became a mainstay in Mines' bullpen. The Fruita, Colo., native appeared on the RMAC Academic Honor Roll in 2021, 2022, and 2023. He also brought home the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award in 2023. His best season by the numbers was 2023 when he went 3-1 with three saves on the way to a 4.70 ERA. That year, the Fruita-Monument High School graduate struck out 15 batters and only walked four. Last May, Lee earned a bachelor's degree from Ines in mechanical engineering. Next week, he will receive a master's degree from Mines in engineering & technology management. He's set to work fulltime with Harvest Midstream as an integrity engineer.

HENRY NOVICKI
Henry Novicki joined the Orediggers this season after playing four years at NCAA Division I Bucknell. He was a two-way player at Bucknell and totaled 21 runs on 30 hits including eight doubles and four home runs with 22 RBI. SCOUTING UCCS
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs Baseball team went 5-20 in the first half of the season. A series split with Regis and a sweep at New Mexico Highlands revived the Mountain Lions' season. They come to Golden with an overall record of 15-29 while sitting 12-16 in conference play, sitting three games out of the final spot in the RMAC tournament bracket. Last weekend, UCCS dropped a series at home against Adams State. The weekend before that, the Mountain Lions managed a win over then-#11 Colorado Mesa. Despite the record, UCCS still touts some powerful bats. Last season, in Colorado Springs, the Orediggers took the series including a 28-20 win in the opener. That four-game set also included Adam Houghtaling hitting for the cycle for the second time in his career and Mason Andrews tying the program record for RBI in a game with seven. The 28 runs scored by Mines in the opener are the most in a game by any Oredigger team in program history.

WALTER PENNINGTON UPDATE

Mikey Gangwish (2016-19) was the first as he played professionally in Australia before returning to a contract with the Evansville Otters of the independent Frontier League. He has since retired and earned his master's degree at Mines. The second was Trevor Kehe (2017-19) who was drafted in the 36th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles. He worked in the Orioles organization for three years and advanced as far as High-A ball with the Aberdeen IronBirds before retiring. Rounding out but leading the trio is Walter Pennington (2017-20).

THE SKIPPER
The 2024 campaign marks Mines' sixth season with Robby Bales as head coach. During his tenure as the Oredigger skipper, Bales holds an overall record of 141-103 with a mark of 92-70 in RMAC play. He has coached 17 All-RMAC players, 10 all-region players, three all-Americans, two RMAC Pitcher of the Year winners, one RMAC Freshman of the Year, seven CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, one MLB Draft Pick and had one player signed as a free agent in the MLB. Additionally, Bales has guided Mines to the NCAA Tournament once, and RMAC Tournament three times, advancing to the regional and conference tournament final in 2019. Bales' teams have also performed in the classroom as the squad brought home the RMAC Brechler Award in 2020, 2021, and 2023 as the team boasting the highest combined GPA in the conference.
