TORONTO, Ontario - Former Colorado School of Mines quarterback
John Matocha is headed to the Canadian Football League, inking a contract with the Toronto Argonauts on Monday.
Matocha, who competed in the Denver Broncos' rookie camp earlier in May, joins the Argos on a two-year contract,
as reported by 9News' Mike Klis.
The greatest touchdown producer in college football history, Matocha graduated from Mines as one of the top quarterbacks in NCAA Division II history, throwing for 15,006 career yards and 162 touchdowns, rushing for 1,982 yards and 28 touchdowns, and compiling the best quarterback rating in D-II history at 172.4. He ranks first all-time in college football history in passing and total (191) touchdowns, and is second in D-II history total offensive yards (17,006), and third in passing yards. In 2023, he passed for 4,298 yards and 43 touchdowns in 15 games while completing 71 percent of his passes; he also ran for a career-high 4.2 yards per attempt with five touchdowns.
A three-year all-American, which included the Harlon Hill Award as the national player of the year in 2022, Matocha led Mines to 50 wins as a four-year starter, winning four consecutive RMAC titles, three straight NCAA regional championships, and the program's only two appearances in the NCAA Division II national championship game. He was a three-time First-Team Academic All-American, including the Academic All-American of the Year in 2022-23 as D-II's top student-athlete, and earned a long list of career accolades including four all-RMAC nods and three NFFCC Colorado Offensive Player of the Year awards as the state's top player. Matocha has two degrees from Mines, a bachelor's and master's, both in computer science.
In Toronto, Matocha reunites with former teammate Mason Pierce, who was one of the CFL's top rookie defensive backs in 2023. Pierce figures to be a starter in 2024 for the Argos after posting 32 tackles, three interceptions (with one returned for a touchdown), a sack, and a forced fumble as a rookie. Matocha is the second straight Mines starting quarterback to head to the CFL; Isaac Harker, the team's 2018 starter, spent three seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2019-21 and played in 32 games.
The Argonauts are currently in camp with their final preseason game May 31 against Hamilton; the CFL season starts June 9 as BC Lions visit Toronto.
The CFL is broadcast in the United States on the CBS Sports Network and on the league's free streaming platform, CFL+.
