Katie Koehler and track & field's
Hunter Potrykus have been named the Spring 2024 President's Senior Scholar-Athletes ahead of the Colorado School of Mines' undergraduate Commencement ceremonies on May 10.
Awarded twice annually prior to the May and December commencements, the prestigious award is given to one male and one female undergraduate student-athlete who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the leadership qualities of an exemplary student-athlete. On Friday, Koehler will receive B.S. in electrical engineering and Potrykus a B.S. in mechanical engineering, both graduating
summa cum laude.
A native of The Woodlands, Texas, Koehler captained the Mines women's soccer team in 2023 and was a member of the Orediggers' 2022 RMAC regular-season and 2020-21 and 2021 RMAC Tournament championship teams. A tenacious defender who started 69 matches at center back, Koehler scored nine career goals with two assists from the backline, including four goals in each of the past two seasons. She is a two-time All-RMAC selection, a 2023 all-region pick, three-time First-Team Academic All-RMAC honoree, and a 2023 Second-Team Academic All-American.
A native of Berthoud, Colo., Potrykus is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and Mines all-time recordholder in the pole vault with a career best of 5.41 meters (17 feet 9 inches) outdoors and 5.35 meters (17 feet 6.5 inches) indoors. He has won five consecutive RMAC pole vault gold medals to finish his career, and is a six-time NCAA national championship qualifier, finishing as an all-American twice. Potrykus was also a First-Team Academic All-American in 2022-23, and is a four-time USTFCCCA All-Region honoree. Potrykus will compete at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Championships in late May, where he currently is seeded third in NCAA Division II.
