LAST WEEK RECAP
Mines had a split schedule last week with one game at home against MSU Denver on Thursday before a quick trip to Regis on Saturday. The Orediggers won both games, marking back-to-back victories for the first time this season. Mines' 71-63 margin against MSU Denver on Thursday was fueled
Jenna Siebert's 31 points, six steals, and five rebounds.
Emma Sixta scored 14 and
Jade Leon finished with nine points. Leon scored seven of her nine points in the first 56 seconds of the fourth quarter. Also notable were 10 rebounds for
Audrey Beaty and 10 combined assists from
Josephine Howery and
Peyton Freiermuth. Siebert starred again at Regis on the way to a 60-49 victory for the Orediggers. The redshirt junior finished touting 27 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Freiermuth added eight rebounds and four assists. The win snapped a three-game skid for Mines against the Rangers.
RMAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jenna Siebert was named RMAC Offensive Player of the Week on Monday after her outstanding performances against MSU Denver and Regis. It marked her first award of the season and of her career. For the week, she averaged 29.0 points and 3.0 assists per game. The guard was 20-of-42 (.476) from the floor, 10-for-24 (.417) from three-point range, and converted eight out of 11 opportunities at the free-throw line. Siebert's scoring ranked #1 in the RMAC for the week and her total assists were eighth most in the league. She scored 31 points on 50-percent shooting against MSU Denver on Thursday night while adding six steals, five rebounds, and one assist. At Regis on Saturday, Siebert added 27 more points on 45-percent shooting with seven rebounds, five assists, and one steal. For the season, the Valor Christian graduate ranks #3 in the RMAC in scoring and sits top-10 in five other statistical categories.
LEVELING UP
After joining an elite Oredigger club earlier this season (see five sections below),
Jenna Siebert leveled up her status in Mines history after scoring 31 points at MSU Denver. First of all, the outburst included 17 points in the third quarter alone which drove the Orediggers to victory. However, it also marked the third game of Siebert's career with more than 30 points. Now, the only players in program history with more games of 30-plus points are
Ashley Steffeck and Denali Pinto. That duo ranks #1 and #2 in all-time scoring at Mines.
FROM DOWNTOWN
If you haven't heard enough about
Jenna Siebert's accomplishments this season, we have you covered. In addition to everything already mentioned, Siebert also entered the program record book for career made three-pointers. With five against MSU Denver, she surpassed Marissa Eichorn at #11 on the all-time list. Five more long-range buckets against Regis pushed the redshirt junior to #10 – a spot previously held by Sam Rusk. Siebert currently touts 111 made three-pointers in her career and is eight back of Stephanie Fogle at #9.
SCOUTING FORT LEWIS
Fort Lewis College's women are 5-13 overall, 2-8 in conference play, and have lost four straight games. The Skyhawks' most-recent results were a 72-62 loss at Colorado Christian and a 74-71 heartbreaker at UCCS. Wins for FLC this season have come against Western New Mexico, Northern New Mexico, MSU Denver, Navajo Technical University, and Westminster. Despite their record, the Skyhawks only have a negative scoring margin of 2.7, their rebounding margin is 4.0 in the red, and they boast a positive turnover margin of 1.2. Individually, Fort Lewis is led by Darla Hernandez who touts game averages of 10.9 points and 7.9 rebounds. Deniece Ryan averages 10.2 points and Livia Knapp turns out 9.2 points along with 2.6 assists per game. Hernandez ranks #46 in the nation with six double-doubles this season.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE SKYHAWKS
Mines has closed the gap in the all-time series with Fort Lewis by winning eight straight against the Skyhawks – a streak dating back to 2020. Additionally, the Orediggers are 9-1 in their last 10 meetings with FLC. Last season, Mines won the first meeting in Durango by a score of 81-62.
Jessica Rios dropped 14 points thanks to four three-pointers in the game. The second meeting, in Golden, was a narrow, 89-82 victory for the Orediggers as Rios scored 13 more points. Mines' last loss to Fort Lewis was on Jan. 11, 2020, at Lockridge Arena. The final score was 64-55. Orlando Griego was the Skyhawks' head coach.
SCOUTING ADAMS STATE
After winning a share of the RMAC title in 2023-24, Adams State has had a roller-coaster season in 2024-25. The Grizzlies are 11-8 overall and 6-4 in conference play. They'll face Regis on Thursday in Denver before coming to Golden on Saturday. Last week, ASU dropped a 77-60 game at CSU Pueblo before bouncing back with an 86-66 win at Colorado Christian. Overall this season, Adams State is 5-1 at home, 3-1 at neutral sites, but just 3-6 in true road games. The Grizzlies boast positive margins in scoring (1.5) and turnovers (8.9), but are negative on the glass by 11.8. They rank #10 in the nation in steals per game and #7 in turnover margin. Individually, Kiiyani Anitielu leads the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game. She adds 2.6 rebounds, 2.4 steals, and 1.5 assists per night as well. Taejhuan Hill is tops on the squad with 8.7 rebounds per game and chips in 12.1 points each outing to boot. Extremely notable are Angelline Nageak's 12.0 points, 4.0 assists, and 3.0 steals per game. Elaina Watson was racking up 3.3 steals per game and averaging 9.1 points, but she hasn't played since December.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE GRIZZLIES
Mines had narrowed the margin in the rivalry with Adams State to 29-34 with 14 straight victories from 2012-23. However, lately, the guidance of ASU Head Coach Mario Caetano has helped the Grizzlies take four straight from the Orediggers. The all-time series now sits at 38-29 in favor Adams State. Mines and ASU faced off earlier this season in Alamosa, Colo. The Grizzlies won by a score of 75-63 as the Orediggers battled sickness in the ranks. Even so,
Jenna Siebert and
Josephine Howery managed 26 points and 20 points, respectively. The last time Mines defeated ASU was Jan. 28, 2023, by a score of 80-69 at Lockridge Arena.
HARRIS' HISTORY
This Thursday marks the first time that Mines Assistant Coach
Taylor Harris will face off against his former team. Prior to joining the Orediggers, Harris served as the Head Women's Basketball Coach at Fort Lewis. During his three-season tenure, the Skyhawks excelled on the court and in the classroom. Among multiple highlights are a victory over NCAA Division I Utah State and the 2022-23 RMAC Brechler Award which honors the highest team grade-point average in the conference. Harris closed his time in Durango with 23 wins.
FROM DOWNTOWN
Against Colorado Christian earlier this season, Mines went 15-of-35 from behind the three-point arc. That gave the Orediggers their most three-pointers in a game this season and their second-best, three-point shooting percentage in the same span. In fact, it was the most three-point field goals made by a Mines team in a single game since the 2021-22 season. The last time the Orediggers made more than 15 three-pointers in a single game was against New Mexico Highlands on Jan. 26, 2022.
ELITE COMPANY
Jenna Siebert joined an elite club after a 31-point outburst at South Dakota Mines. That performance made her just the fifth player in program history to record multiple games of 30 points or more in a career. The only other players in Oredigger women's history to have multiple 30-point games in their respective careers are Denali Pinto,
Ashley Steffeck, Mary Meager, and Angie Charchalis.
INTO THE RECORD BOOK
Jenna Siebert put her name in the program record book after her 34-point explosion against Minnesota State in November. She's now tied for fifth for points in a game in program history. The redshirt junior matched Courtney Martin's output at Chadron State from the 2014-15 season. Overall, Siebert is the 16th Oredigger to ever score 30 or more points in a single game. Her performance marked the 26th time that 30 or more points have been scored by a Mines player in a single game. The Orediggers with more points than Siebert in a single night are Taylor Helbig, Denali Pinto, Laura Marshall, and
Ashley Steffeck.
DISHING DIMES
Peyton Freiermuth also put her name in the program record book against defending national champion Minnesota State. With 11 assists, she became the sixth Oredigger to ever dish out double-digit dimes in a single game. Freiermuth's performance tied her with Laura Tyree for third on Mines' all-time list. The only Orediggers with more assists than Freiermuth in a single game are Liz Holter and Debbie Gangloff.
SISTER-SISTER
The Orediggers' 2024-25 roster features sisters
Michaela Lee and
Olivia Lee. Michaela is in her second season at Mines. As a true freshman, she came off the bench and scored six points, grabbed eight rebounds, blocked four shots, and grabbed two steals in just 28 total minutes of action. Olivia is in her first, and only, season as an Oredigger. She started her collegiate career at Western New Mexico before transferring to Cal State San Bernardino after two seasons. The elder Lee completed her bachelor's degree at CSUSB and came to Mines to pursue a master's degree and play her final season of collegiate basketball. Prior to becoming an Oredigger, Olivia accumulated 462 points, 391 rebounds, 61 blocks, 35 assists, and 21 steals across 81 games.
MEET TAYLOR HARRIS
The Mines coaching staff added a fresh face last spring with
Taylor Harris taking over as assistant coach for the Orediggers. Harris, a 14-year veteran coach, came to the Orediggers after leading Fort Lewis' women's squad for three seasons. Other stops for the Colorado native include Miles Community College (Mont.), and 10 years of service at fellow RMAC programs in Regis and MSU Denver. Fans can check out Harris' full biography
HERE.
BOSS LADY
Head Coach
Brittany Simpson is in her 13th season leading the Mines women's basketball program. During her decade-plus tenure, she has become the winningest coach in program history both in terms of total wins and win percentage at 226-134 (62.7). Simpson is responsible for all three of the program's RMAC titles including regular-season championships in 2015-16, 2020-21, and 2021-22. She has also led the Orediggers in five of their six trips to the NCAA tournament. Simpson is a three-time RMAC Coach of the Year who has guided 36 All-RMAC selections including 15 first-teamers, 11 second-teamers, one third-team selection and nine honorable mention performers. She has also coached one RMAC Player of the Year, two RMAC Defensive Players of the Year, and two RMAC Freshman of the Year award winners. Eight of Mines' 13 1,000-point scorers have surpassed the milestone under Simpson's watch.
