The Winter Classic will see the track program plus shot put, long jump, pole vault, and the first day of the heptathlon take place on Friday in the afternoon and evening, with Saturday's action consisting of the heptathlon and pentathlon, and the weight throw, triple jump, and high jump.

WHAT TO WATCH
There will be plenty of action in Golden as the Orediggers will host a full complement of field events, both multis, and a split Friday session on the track that includes the 60m dash and 60m hurdles starting at 1:30 p.m., and a distance night with the DMRs, women's 5K, and men's 3K starting at 5:30 p.m.Â
The Colorado Invitational on Saturday will be a chance for Mines' track runners to get work in as the hurdlers double up and the Orediggers' strong 400m crew gets a chance to work again on the large 300m oval. Mines will also have competitors in the 200m, 800m, mile, 3000m, and 4x400 relay. Colorado's schedule begins at 11 a.m. MT.Â
It's a singular focus in Boston as six Oredigger men aim for NCAA qualification in the 5,000m on BU's fast banked track. The Orediggers' scoring five from their cross country national championship in November will be on the track -
Logan Bocovich,
Loic Scomparin,
Ethan Grolnic,
Paul Knight, and
Dawson Gunn - along with
Matt Mettler. Scomparin returns to the track where he already set the NCAA D-II 3K record back in December; the top five and seven of the top eight Mines 5K times in program history have been run on that track including Scomparin's 13:29.35 (#2 all-time) last year. Those races go off at 7:20 p.m. ET.
LAST TIME OUT
Mines produced strong performances in multiple events as they competed at the Colorado Running Company UCCS Invite last Saturday.
Holden Murphy reset his program weight throw record among multiple collegiate bests for the Orediggers, who won seven events overall including both the men's and women's 4x400 relays. In addition to Murphy's victory,
Jonah Fallon took the 400m dash win,
Everett Delate the 60m hurdles,
Kitt Rupar won the shot put, and
Hayley Rayburn the pole vault plus the relay wins.Â
IN THE POLLS
The first USTFCCCA indoor ratings index of the season was released earlier this week and Mines debuted both teams in the top 10 with the men at #3 and women at #6. The men's ranking is its best since the 2022 season and their best debut poll since 2020. For the women, #6 marks their highest ranking since the 2021 season and their best debut showing ever.
TWICE AS NICE
Holden Murphy continues to rewrite Mines' record book in the weight throw, breaking the program record on two consecutive weekends as he flirts with the 20-meter mark. Murphy threw 19.48m at the Colorado Classic on Jan. 17 to first break the record, then went 19.69m at the UCCS Invite last weekend to improve on that. In his lone season as an Oredigger, the graduate transfer from Loras and former D-III All-American has four of the top five throws in program history, and has been over 19 meters in all four of his meets; he ranks seventh on the D-II national performance list.Â
FRONT OF THE PACK
Heading into February, Mines has four competitors who rank atop their respective events in NCAA Division II. Currently,
Tim Thompson (800m, 1:48.71),
Loic Scomparin (3K, 7:43.96),
Everett Delate (60mH, 7.80) and
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge (5K, 15:40.98) rank atop the national performance list, and both Scomparin and Ramsey-Rutledge's performances were NCAA Division II records in those events. All national performance list marks are converted for altitude and track size.Â
RECORD SETTERS
The 2024-25 Oredigger squad now includes 12 active program recordholders. For the men,
Loic Scomparin (3K),
Everett Delate (60H),
Holden Murphy (WT), and
Hunter Potrykus (PV) are all atop their events, while
Avery Wright (60H and pentathlon),
Margaux Basart (3K),
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge (5K),
Kitt Rupar (SP), and
Hayley Rayburn (PV) have their names on the women's indoor record wall. Two more women -
Allison Comer (400H) and
Claire Kintzley (TJ) - are having strong indoor seasons after they broke outdoor records last spring, with Wright adding the outdoor heptathlon record as well.
VAILLE REPRESENTS USA AT WORLD UNIVERSITY GAMES
Mines distance runner
Jeremiah Vaille has had a memorable start to his semester as he represented the United States at the Winter World University Games in Torino, Italy, which wrapped up on Jan. 23. Vaille placed fourth and was the top American in the men's Ski Mountaineering Vertical race on Sunday, a challenging uphill event that combines cross country skiing, mountain running, and climbing. Vaille also competed in the ski mountaineering sprint and mixed relay races. This past fall, Vaille was a cross country all-American finishing 37th as a member of the national champion Oredigger men's team, and he opened the indoor season with what is currently the nation's #13 5,000m time of 14:00.32 (converted) at the Mines Alumni Classic.Â
POWELL TO RUN IN ARMED FORCES XC CHAMPIONSHIP
Former three-time NCAA champion Dillon Powell continues to compete as he finished sixth at last Saturday's Armed Forces Cross Country Championship in San Antonio. Now an ensign in the United States Navy, Powell ran an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:16.16 in finishing ninth at the Twin Cities Marathon in Minnesota back in October. Powell was an eight-time all-American at Mines, including winning the 2022 NCAA Division II Cross Country individual championship in leading the Orediggers to the team title.
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE, PART I
Mines men's cross country lifted its fourth NCAA Division II national championship since 2015 on Nov. 23, coming back in the final two kilometers to edge Wingate in a thrilling race in Sacramento.
Logan Bocovich,
Loic Scomparin, and
Ethan Grolnic finished 7-8-9 while
Paul Knight was 21st and
Dawson Gunn 25th to beat the Bulldogs by three points. The women placed fifth led by
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge, whose third-place individual run marked the best finish ever by an Oredigger woman.
THE CHAMPS ARE HERE, PART II
The Mines indoor program made history in 2023-24 by winning both the RMAC men's and women's championships, the first time in program history they have won both at the same time. It was the second consecutive title for the women and the third since 2016 for the men.Â
EARNING SILVER
Six current and former Mines track & field student-athletes earned degrees at the university's winter commencement ceremonies on Dec. 13. Two current squad members -
Shane Conley and
Alex Shaw - earned the B.S. degrees in Chemical and Biological Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, respectively, while four alumni earned master's degrees in
Duncan Fuehne (Applied Physics), Bo Raadam (Earth Resources Development Engineering),
Zoe Baker (Computer Science), and
Aryelle Wright (Quantitative Biosciences & Engineering).Â
LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will take part in the Steve Miller Invitational at Kansas State on Feb. 7.Â
