The Colorado School of Mines Club Esports program continued its midseason momentum this past week (October 6–10), notching victories in six of seven matches across its competitive titles, including standout performances from the Rainbow Six Siege, Valorant, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike squads.
League of Legends Varsity opened the week with a forfeit win over the University of British Columbia Okanagan, moving to 3–0 on the season. The Junior Varsity match was rescheduled.
On Tuesday, October 7, Rocket League Varsity faced off against Washington State University but fell 0–3 in a tough matchup. The team now sits at 1–3 on the season and will look to rebound next week against the University of Redlands.
Meanwhile, Rainbow Six Siege Varsity delivered one of Mines' most impressive performances of the week, defeating William Penn University 2–0. After a slow start, Mines rallied to take Map 1 (Clubhouse) 7–3 before dominating Map 2 (Nighthaven Labs) 7–1. The victory over a highly ranked opponent secured the Orediggers the #1 seed in their division with an undefeated 3–0 record. Key highlights included a 1v3 clutch from Liam Holan (Jediwinner) on Clubhouse (watch here) and a match-clinching ace from Oliver Wolfe (ooolive.CSM) in a 2v5 situation on Nighthaven Labs (watch here). Consistent standouts Michael Goertz (MikeMinder) and Oliver Wolfe (ooolive.CSM) continue to lead the squad statistically, boasting season K/Ds of 1.91 and 2.07, respectively.
Overwatch Varsity returned to form on Wednesday, October 8, with a convincing 3–1 win over Utah State University. While the match was not streamed, the team showed strong coordination and execution, setting their sights on continuing their success next week versus the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa.
Valorant action dominated Thursday night as both teams brought home commanding sweeps. The Varsity squad pulled off an upset win over the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2–0) — taking Lotus 13–4 and Abyss 13–10. Noah Fischbeck ("Idk") led the charge as in-game leader, posting 36 kills and a +14 differential, while Diego Chavez ("Loophole388") came up clutch in a pivotal round by sticking the spike while revealed by a Sova dart (watch here). Chris Swanson Booth ("bs12") also stood out in his new Yoru role, winning multiple rounds through smart utility and bold plays. The JV team made quick work of California State University, sweeping both maps in under 30 minutes behind a stellar MVP performance from Jadon Beacham ("Wunderworld").
Counter-Strike Varsity capped off the week with their first win of the season — a 2–0 victory over Louisiana State University. After narrowly taking Map 1 (Overpass) 13–11, Mines dominated Map 2 (Ancient) 13–1 with crisp teamplay and mechanical prowess. Zaudan Wawhkyung ("WoodRank") earned MVP honors with a 1.74 K/D and 119.0 ADR, consistently producing multi-kill rounds. Notable highlights included Ezra Rigler ("pneumo")'s incredible 180° flick (clip), Aaron Jackson ("tozosi")'s double run boost for a lightning-fast site entry (clip), and Oliver Greener ("yag") sealing Map 1 with a last-second 1v2 clutch (clip). The team's confidence carried into Ancient, where Johnson Tran ("Aleusian") added style points with a knife kill (clip).
With victories across nearly every title, Mines Club Esports continues to prove its strength in national collegiate play. The Orediggers will look to build on their success as they continue the season.
