GOLDEN, Colo. - An electric performance by the Orediggers' freshmen long jumpers highlighted the opening day of the indoor track & field season at the Mines Alumni Classic in Steinhauer Fieldhouse.
Violet Williams smashed the women's all-venues record with her 6.21m jump, while
Alejandro Philippart leaped 7.38m - Mines' best men's mark in a decade - to win his competition.
Williams broke Lexye Wood's program record of 6.04m with her fourth attempt, and also went over six meters with a 6.02m fifth try after making finals with a 5.98m second jump. Williams' 6.21m would have been only a centimeter behind the #1 mark in the nation last indoor season and easily tops the opening-day results from around NCAA Division II on Friday. It is the best performance in all RMAC competitons since 2021.
The men's long jump turned into a terrific dual between Mines and UCCS competitors, topped by Philippart who became the Mines #3 all-time long jumper with his final attempt of 7.38m. That finished an outstanding finals that saw him go 7.19m and 7.22m prior to his furthest mark. Classmate
Thierry Asare turned in a 6.93m best for seventh, tying him for ninth all-time at Mines in the event, and
Zander Besch was only two centimeters back with an eighth-place best of 6.91m.
Avery Wright hit 5.42m for 11th in the women's long jump, a spot ahead of
Lisa Sutherland at 5.40m, with
Kelle Vernon marking 5.20m in her debut for 14th.
The women's pole vault was the first event in the books on Friday with both
Arabella Chen and
Taylor Hindman clearing 3.42m to finish third and fourth, and
Madeline Obuchowski and
Julia Acker clearing 3.27m for fifth and sixth.
Aidan Bennett won the men's pole vault with his 4.80m clearance, and a quartet of Orediggers were third through sixth as
Jay Peonio cleared a career-best 4.65m,
Nick Stade took out 4.50m as did freshman
Kellar Cimini, and
Connor Langsford got over 4.35m.
In the circle,
Franklin Rambo won the men's shot put with his final throw of 16.58m, with
Vaughn Hafner taking sixth at a personal-best 14.41m,
Keaton Reiman seventh at 14.16m, and
Hayden Swim eighth at 13.89m with Stade marking 11.56m for 13th.
Audrey Ott was the lone Oredigger in the women's competition, marking 11.15m to place seventh.
The second day of the Alumni Classic starts Saturday at 9:30 a.m., with track events at 1 p.m.
