Sixta Seals 70-53 Victory at MSU Denver

DENVER, Colo.Emma Sixta led the Colorado School of Mines Women's Basketball team to a 7-53 win on Tuesday night at MSU Denver.

Sixta led all players with 21 points on 75-percent shooting. She hit two three-pointers, was perfect at the free-throw line, and tallied three assists and three steals as well. Right behind Sixta was Peyton Freiermuth who scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds, notched two steals, dished out two assists, and recorded one block. Jessica Rios poured in 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting including two shots from long range. She also had four rebounds and one assist. Jenna Siebert made it a quartet of double-digit scorers for the visitors. She had 12 points in 28 minutes on the court which also included two rebounds and two steals. Also notable were four assists and six rebounds courtesy of Josephine Howery. Millard Nevaeh was the leading scorer for the other team thanks to 17 points.

The victory gave Mines (11-14, 9-8 RMAC) its third straight win. The Orediggers shot over 48 percent from the floor and held MSU Denver (6-19, 5-12 RMAC) under 30-percent shooting. The Roadrunners suffered their eighth straight loss after committing 23 turnovers. They recorded six three-pointers compared to eight by the visitors from Golden. In an intriguing twist, Mines only converted eight out of 18 free-throw opportunities. Meanwhile, MSU Denver put in 75 percent of its 20 chances at the charity stripe. The home team also won the battle on the glass, but 30 points in the paint helped Mines offset the difference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It took more than two minutes for either team to get on the scoreboard on Tuesday night. When the scoring silence broke, it was a Siebert layup that made the noise. After that, Mines never surrendered the lead. Sixta and Siebert accounted for all of the Orediggers' 16 points in the first quarter. By halftime, Sixta was up to 16 points and Mines owned a 31-17 lead. The third quarter saw the visitors build a 16-point cushion. Freiermuth, Siebert, and Sixta all played a part by scoring five points each. Rios burst on the scene in the final frame with nine points. It was enough to cancel out 11 points by the Roadrunners' Millard. The Orediggers never trailed and the game was never tied.
