COLORADO SPRINGS - Colorado School of Mines crowned four individual champions to hold the men's and women's team leads after the first day of the 2025 RMAC Indoor Championships at UCCS.
Hayley Rayburn led three Mines medalists in the women's pole vault with a new championship record,
Loic Scomparin led a podium sweep of the men's 5,000m,
Avery Wright captured the pentathlon title, and
Jennifer Jarnagin ended the night atop the women's weight throw podium to lead the Orediggers.
Through five scored events, the Mines men lead with 63 points ahead of UCCS' 54. The women have 81.5 points through six events with UCCS second at 65.
Rayburn cleared 4.28m to break the championship and facility records and capture the women's pole vault gold atop a podium filled with Orediggers, as
Dale Thompson's season-best 3.98m captured silver and
Ava Kowalski tied for third with a 3.78m bar. Mines added points thanks to
Taylor Hindman's seventh-place 3.68m clearance, and
Madeline Obuchowski was eighth over 3.38m.
Maddie Kelly was tied for 10th at 3.23m.
A down-to-the-wire finish to the women's pentathlon saw
Avery Wright capture the gold and
Lisa Sutherland get onto the podium in the final event with her bronze medal. Wright scored a commanding 3,561 points thanks to an 8.76 60m time, 1.49m high jump height, 12.42m shot put, 5.30m long jump, and then a 2:32.79 800m. Sutherland ran a strong 2:32.80 800m to jump up a spot and take third by only four points at 3,217; she had results of 9.24 seconds in the hurdles, 1.49m in the high jump, 9.37m in the shot, and 5.15m in the long jump.
Mines dominated the 5,000m run, earning five of six medals between the men's and women's races including the men's podium sweep.
Loic Scomparin (14:47.75),
Daniel Appleford (14:51.25), and
Logan Bocovich (14:51.51) took gold through bronze, but Mines wasn't done there as
Paul Knight (14:55.88),
Dawson Gunn (14:57.73), and
Ethan Grolnic (15:07.54) finished fifth through seventh; Mines scored a massive 33 points in the event.
Braden Struhs had a strong run in the opening heat to finish 13th in 15:29.84, and
Jeremiah Vaille was 15th in 15:37.10. The women's race ended with Mines scoring four runners led by the silver-bronze duo of
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge (17:31.35) and
Emily LaMena (17:46.07), with
Margaux Basart fourth (17:59.15) and
Callen Nash sixth (18:11.58) to combine for 22 team points.
Josie Mejia finished 11th in 18:34.85.
The Orediggers bookended the day with weight throw medals as Jarnagin's opening attempt of 18.99m - the #2 throw in program history - held up to easily win gold.
Holden Murphy started the morning with silver in the men's event, throwing 19.72m.
More medals came for Mines in the men's pole vault where
Hunter Potrykus claimed silver (5.07m) and
Aidan Bennett bronze (4.87m), with
Noah Kelly's 4.62m bar good for fifth as Mines scored 18 team points.
Jay Peonio was 12th in his RMACs debut over 4.32m.
Claire Kintzley added two valuable team points as she recorded 5.53m for seventh in the long jump; she will take on the triple jump on Saturday.
The distance medley relays closed the night on the track as the women's combo of
Grace Strongman,
Maya Evans,
Avary Catchings, and Ramsey-Rutledge finished fourth in an NCAA-provisional 12:04.24, and the men were fifth in 10:18.22 with
Shalom Trowbridge,
Austin Schmidt,
Owen Schneider, and
Andreas O'Malley on the baton.
Through the first day of the men's heptathlon,
Nick Stade stands second to lead three Orediggers in the multi. Stade led the 60m dash in 7.05 seconds, then hit 6.89m in the long jump, 10.69m in the shot put, and 1.90m in the high jump to compile 2,894 points.
Vaughn Hafner is fifth led by a strong 12.79m shot put in addition to a 7.31-second 60m 5.86m in the long jump, and 1.93 in the high jump, and
Jake LaFore is ninth highlighted by his 12.07m shot put to go with a 7.32 60m, 5.63m long jump, and 1.69m high jump.
Mines had a strong day in track prelims, sending nine through to Saturday finals.
Everett Delate reset his championship meet record with a 7.81-second 60m hurdles time to cruise into the final as the top seed, while
Coulton Chan edged his personal best by a hundredth in 8.25 to qualify sixth.
Avery Wright and
Allison Comer are both through to the 60m hurdles final as Wright ran the second-fastest time in program history - 8.59 - and Comer ran a personal-best 8.83 to advance.
Lisa Sutherland ran 9.16 to finish 10th. Comer and
Grace Galvin qualified for the women's 400m final as Galvin ran her personal best of 57.57 for third and Comer 58.23 for fifth.
Maya Evans finished ninth in 59.05.
Jonah Fallon qualified atop the men's 400m in 48.01 with
Elijah Quinby through in 49.73;
Liam Currie finished ninth in 50.29,
Ollie Sehr 14th in 50.91, and
Austin Schmidt 17th in 51.05.
Tegan Daughters ran a personal-best 6.94 seconds for 12th in the 60m dash, and later qualified for the 200m final with a 22.38 time.
The RMAC Championships conclude Saturday at UCCS.
