MANHATTAN, Kan. - Franklin Rambo snapped Mines' men's shot put mark to lead Colorado School of Mines at Kansas State's Steve Miller Invitational on Friday.
Rambo qualified ninth for the shot put finals, but ended up in second place after a meter-plus personal-best throw of 17.77m snapped the Mines record and pushed him into the lead this season in the RMAC. The throw ranks #10 in NCAA Division II this winter. Rambo bested Arvid Veidmark IV's 17.52m set at the 2022 RMAC Championships.
Abbi Gillespie became the latest Oredigger weight thrower to hit a huge personal best, becoming only the second Mines woman over 18 meters as she finished seventh at an RMAC-leading and NCAA-provisional 18.11m. That takes her to #2 on the program all-time performance list with the #4 all-time mark.
Kitt Rupar was close to her PR as well with an 11th-place 16.69m, and
Jennifer Jarnagin was 13th with a 16.48m best. In the men's weight throw,
Holden Murphy marked 19.00m even for fourth place as the only D-II competitor in the field.
A week after setting the RMAC pole vault record and earning national athlete of the week honors for it,
Hayley Rayburn went big once again, clearing a bar of 4.32m to tie for third in a strong field of vaulters. That ranks as the second-highest performance in program history behind only her 4.40m from the Mines Winter Classic.
Dale Thompson got over the opening height of 3.77m for 14th.
Emily LaMena highlighted the Oredigger women on the track as she led a quick group of 3,000m runners with the second-fastest time in program history, winning the event in 9:29.99.
Grace Strongman finished a spot behind her as the new Mines #5 all-time performer in 9:38.24, and
Margaux Basart was fourth in 9:43.66, all NCAA provisional times.
Lexi Herr closed eighth in 10:06.66.
Avery Wright was 15th in the long jump with a 4.95m mark, and ran 9.52 for 17th in the 60m hurdles.
Claire Kintzley was ninth in the triple jump with an 11.48m best, and
Kitt Rupar was 11th in the shot put with a 13.11m third throw.
For the men on the track,
Jonah Fallon ran a sub-48.00 400m for the second consecutive weekend, recording the second-fastest time in program history as he finished second in the invite race in 47.57.
Tegan Daughters ran a sub-22.0 200m for the second consecutive week, finishing eighth with a 21.96 time. In the field,
Hunter Potrykus marked 5.19m in the pole vault and
Noah Kelly got over 4.89m, and Murphy finished 11th in the shot put at 15.32m.
Mines will compete at UCCS' Mountain Lions Open next weekend.
