MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Back in action for day two in the Sunshine State, the Colorado School of Mines softball team squared off against another preseason Top 25 opponent in #16 East Stroudsburg followed by the second meeting of the weekend with Barry. Unfortunately for the Orediggers (0-8), fate did not shine kindly on them as a walk-off three-run home run in game one lifted the Warriors (4-2) to a 6-4 win a game in which Mines held the lead for 26 outs while in the nightcap an early crooked number was too much to overcome in a 5-3 loss to the Bucs (4-3).
The action started right away in the top of the first as
Kellan Ton reached on an at shortstop to set the table for the Mines offense.
Kendall Aragon followed with a double to the left center gap that scored ton as she ended up on third on the throw. A video review whether Aragon left early proved uneventful as she scored on a sacrifice fly by
Kailey Morales.
Cassidy Chvatal kept business going with a seven-pitch walk before
Hannah Roberts and
Lexie Semeyn both single to load the bases. That was enough to chase ESU starter Faith Troyer as Abbie Landrum took over in the circle looking to limit the damage.
Lindy French was first to great the new arm and laced a 2-2 single back up the middle to plate a run before a fielder's choice off the bat of
E Self got an out at second but resulted in another run to make it 4-0.
Ellen Shull worked around a two-out error to hang a zero in her first inning of work to keep momentum in the Orediggers' dugout.
In the third, East Stroudsburg cracked the scoreboard as they loaded the bases with two bunt single and an error before a fielder's choice by Abigail Weirich scored Tulana Mingin before Shull got a popup to Roberts to escape danger. Mines looked to answer in the fourth as consecutive singles by Ton and Aragon saw them reach and eventually work their way into scoring position before the Warriors averted another big inning with a strikeout.
After the Orediggers went down in order in the fifth, ESU closed the gap to 4-3 behind a two-run double to left with two outs by Weirich, but Shull rebounded to get a first pitch flyout to right to limit the damage. The Warriors threatened again in their half of the sixth, chasing Shull with a one-out single up the middle.
Kat Miller (0-3) took over and after getting a force out at second, issued a four-pitch walk to put the go-ahead run on base. ESU went to the bench, lifting both runners for more speed, but it didn't matter as Miller escaped the jam with another force at second to preserve the lead.
Looking to add some insurance in the seventh, Morales coaxed leadoff walk before
Emily Rogers took over running at first base. The sophomore advanced to second thanks to a sac bunt but no further as Mines left their eighth runner of the game on base. Heading to the home half, Miller got the first two outs easily enough with a pair of lineouts before a single and an error put the tying and go-ahead runs at the corners. Unfortunately, the third out remained elusive as Katie Master hit the first pitch she saw over the wall in left center for a walk-off three-run home run with post a 6-4 win.
Game two saw a scoreless first inning before Barry scored five runs in the second with just one hit in the inning. A leadoff lineout was followed by an hit by pitch, an E1 and a walk to load the bases. Maggie Boyd scored the first two runs with a single to right field before a fielders choice on a sac bunt by Bri Pellicone resulted in now outs and two more runs coming across. Pellicone later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-0 Bucs.
Mines started to rally in the third as
Lindy French led off with a single before Kellon Ton joined her with a bunt single to third. The pair moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch before French scored on a two-out infield single by Morales to get on the board. After
Taylor Wayne (0-2) retired the side in order thanks to a caught stealing by Morales, they plated another run in the fourth.
Hannah Roberts tripled to center with one out before French scored her on a ball through the infield to make it 5-2.
Another zero by Wayne was rewarded with another run in the fifth as
Mia Lopez led off the frame with a hit by pitch before scoring on a two-out single to left by
Cassidy Chvatal. Wayne went 1-2-3 in the home fifth but another run was not to be in the sixth as
Kate Whipple worked a pinch hit walk and Ton Reached on an error, but a force at third ended the inning. Another 1-2-3 by Wayne in the bottom of the inning gave the Orediggers a chance down two in the seventh, as the tying run came the plate following a two-out error, but an infield popup closed the book on a 5-3 loss.
