UNDER NEW LEADERSHIP
On December 2, 2024, Tobin Echo-Hawk was named the 13th head coach of Mines softball. A Colorado native from nearby Louisville and most recently the head softball coach of Erie High School, Echo-Hawk brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Golden.
An All-American infielder at Nebraska during the Huskers' ascendance to a national powerhouse, Echo-Hawk holds numerous single-season and career records from a highly decorated career. After her time in Lincoln, Echo-Hawk got her coaching start at Portland State University as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before being elevated to the head position after two seasons. She led the Vikings for five years before moving onto the University of Texas El Paso for six seasons as head coach. Her most recent stop at the collegiate level was at New Mexico State where she spent two seasons as an assistant coach.

WEEK 7 RECAP
Mines dropped three of four in their second home weekend of the series last time out to Colorado Christian, dropping games one, three and four by scores of 8-2, 13-2 in five innings and 3-1 with a marathon 3-2 11-inning walk-off in game two Sunday to avoid the sweep.
Kat Miller shined in the winning effort, striking out a career-high eight and stranding 13 runners on base and allowing just three runs in 16 hits before a potential double play ball of the bat of
Lindy French turned into an error, allowing Kendal Aragon to score the winning run.
Cassidy Chvatal also provided some highlights at the plate, belting three home runs in the series including one in each game on Monday to become the first Mines players in five seasons to reach double figure home runs in a season.
IN THE POLLS
The Orediggers were picked to finish seventh in the RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll as announced back on January 16. Colorado Mesa was voted as the favorite to win the league in 2025 followed by Colorado Christian, MSU Denver, Regis and CSU Pueblo. UCCS was one spot ahead of Mines in sixth while behind the Orediggers, Fort Lewis, Black Hills State, Chadron State, New Mexico Highlands and Adams State round out the 12 teams.
MEET THE CAPTAINS
A new group of captains will lead the Orediggers into the 2025 season as seniors
Cassidy Chvatal,
Kailey Morales and
Hannah Roberts will be joined by redshirt junior
Taylor Wayne and junior
Kendall Aragon.
Chvatal transitioned into a new role as the everyday right fielder for Mines in 2024 and had an outstanding season, starting all 50 games she played and batting .285 and leading the team with eight home runs and 10 doubles while driving in 27 runs and scoring 30.
Morales, a veteran catcher with 47 games behind the dish, belted her first career home run last season and added a pair of doubles while scoring seven times and driving in seven while helping guide the pitching staff to a 3.73 ERA in 2024.
Roberts emerged as the full-time starter at second base last spring after platooning there her first two seasons. She started 45 times in 47 games and batted .283 with six doubles, 10 RBI and 19 runs scored and hit .411 over the final three weeks of the season, as well as posting a career-best .956 fielding percentage.
Wayne missed the entirety of 2024 recovering from a hand injury and will look to contribute in multiple positions in 2025. In 2023, she won three games in the circle and struck out 30 in 62 innings of work with her best performance coming at Chadron State on March 20, when she spun a one-hit shutout.
Aragon, a two-time All-RMAC performer in her first two seasons, has been a fixture in the outfield since the day she stepped on campus. A starter in all 101 games she has played, Aragon is a career .390 hitter and has scored 59 runs while driving in 46 and turning in back-to-back 60-hit seasons.
OFFSEASON UPGRADES
Fans coming to Joe Coors, Jr. Softball Field in 2025 will notice the venue got a facelift over the offseason. The latest in a long series of facility improvements saw the complete resurfacing of the field with artificial turf thanks in large part to the vision and generosity of numerous individuals, headed up by a trio of softball alumni in Kerry Siggins '01, Kari Gonzales '02 and Kim Alanis '04. Take a look at the completed project
here.
NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK
The Orediggers have completed a full update of their uniforms ahead of the 2025 season with the addition of a new navy uniform. Last spring, two new uniforms took to the field with the addition of new white and gray kits reflective of the recent branding updates across the athletic department. Take a look at the new threads Mines will be rocking this spring
here.
SURVEYING THE STANDINGS
The top three in RMAC standings look much the same as they have in previous years in some combination as Colorado Christian, MSU Denver and Colorado Mesa lead the way with records of 18-2, 16-3 and 16-4 respectively. The surprise of the season by far has to be Black Hills State, who sits tied with CMU for fourth at 16-4 after being picked ninth in the preseason poll back in January. UCCS is fifth with a mark of 14-5 while CSU Pueblo holds the sixth spot with a record of 13-6. If the season ended today, Regis and Mines would be the first two teams out of the RMAC Tournament with records of 8-12 and 6-13 in league play each. Chadron State is ninth at 5-15 while New Mexico Highlands and Adams State are tied for 10th at 2-18 with Fort Lewis bringing up the rear at 1-18 in league play.
BOMBS AWAY
The Orediggers haven't been known in recent seasons as a "power hitting" ball club, but this season they may be looking to change that misnomer.
Cassidy Chvatal and
Lexie Semeyn are both in the top six in the league lead in home runs this season with Chvatal tied for first alongside Colorado Mesa's Myah Arrieta. The duo of Chvatal and Semeyn account for 17 of the team's 20 home runs, which is tied for fifth in the RMAC this season and has now surpassed last season's home run total of 19 with 24 games to play.
so far with seven and account for 14 of the team's 17 home runs. That total is now nearly
triple the seven Mines hit in the 2023 season and one shy of the 18 in the 2022 campaign (the Orediggers ranked 12th and 11th in those seasons in home runs respectively). Perhaps something to watch under the new regime of Tobin Echo-Hawk is the rise of the long ball over the course of the season.
YARD WORK
Since taking a step away from the circle last spring to become an everyday field player for the Orediggers,
Cassidy Chvatal has made quite a name for herself as one of the top power hitters in the RMAC over the past two seasons. After taking over duties in right field in 2024 and transitioning to first base this season, the senior from Broomfield has been a staple in the middle of the Mines lineup and a run-producing machine. During last weekend's series against Colorado Christian, Chvatal left the yard three times including once in each game Sunday, giving her 10 home runs this season to remain tied atop the league standings in big flies and becoming the first Orediggers since Clara Larson in 2021 to hit double digit home runs in a single season. That's good enough to put her in the single-season record books in a five-way tie for sixth with Larson (2017, 2019, 2021), Courtney Derus (2013, 2014), Sarah Lustgraaf (2011, 2012) and Taylor Cayou (2008) and with 24 games to go this season, the all-time record for home runs in a season is not out of reach at 15. Additionally, Chvatal is now on the all-time home run list as well with 20, putting her in a three-way tie for eighth with Macy Jones (2010-13) and Derus (13-14) and is one back sixth and three back of fifth.
ROAD TRIPPING
Having played at home just twice over the first seven weeks of the season, the Orediggers are probably looking forward to the month of April when they will play 12 of their final 16 regular season games at Joe Coors, Jr. Softball Field. But before that, they have another eight-game road trip to get through, starting this weekend at Regis before heading to Black Hills State next weekend. At the conclusion of the next two weekends, Mines will have played 30 of their first 38 games at an away venue, either as a neutral site contests or a true road game. Now past the halfway point of the 2025 season, the Orediggers will look to gain some momentum over the next two weeks of play and bring that with them as they return home in the month of April for a critical final push for the postseason.
CHECKING THE STAT SHEET
A new name tops the stat sheet for Mines as
Kendall Aragon is now the team leader in batting at .333 with seven doubles, a triple, 17 runs scored and 11 RBI while getting on base at a .408 clip.
Kellan Ton follows at .314 with two doubles and a triple and has driven in six while scoring 15 and is 9-9 on steal attempts while
Lindy French is also batting .314 with two RBI and eight runs scored.
The dangerous duo of
Lexie Semeyn and
Cassidy Chvatal follow with Semeyn batting .293 with five doubles, a triple and seven home runs with 21 RBI and 17 runs scored while slugging .667. Chvatal meanwhile is batting .283 and slugging .663 with three doubles, a triple and 10 home runs and leads the team with 26 RBI while scoring 18 as both players have an OPS of 1.040 or better.
Emiaj Self is settling in as the starting shortstop and is batting .275 with eight RBI while
Emily Rogers has been filling a utility role across multiple positions and is batting .213 with a home run and eight RBI.
Kailey Morales has also driven in eight and has belted three doubles this season while
Mia Lopez has a triple and seven RBI.
Hannah Roberts returned to action last weekend and is hitting .275 with two doubles, a triple and two home runs and is third on the team with 14 RBI.
In the circle,
Kat Miller will look to shake off a tough start Sunday and build off her three prior outings which included an 11-inning win Sunday as she leads the pitching staff with a 3-8 record along with a save in nine starts across 16 appearances and carries a 3.99 ERA with 24 strikeouts.
Taylor Wayne also returned to action last weekend after missing the MSU Denver series and is 3-7 with a 5.83 ERA in 12 games with 10 starts and leads the team with 69.2 innings of work and 34 strikeouts.
Ellen Shull comes into the weekend 0-5 with eight starts in 11 appearances for 38 innings while
Allison Westbrook is 1-3 with three starts in 10 outings for 18 innings.
As a team, Mines is batting .269 with a .353 on-base percentage and is slugging .388 and is -79 in run differential. The pitching staff has an ERA of 6.11 and has issued 139 free passes and struck out 71 while opponents have batted .351 against them. Defensively, the Orediggers are fielding .945 with 48 errors in 30 games this season.
SCOUTING REGIS
Another RMAC team under new direction this season, the defending RMAC Tournament champions enter the weekend with a record of 9-20 overall and 8-12 in the RMAC under first-year head coach Candi Letts. Last time out, the Rangers dropped three out of four at home to Black Hills State, losing by scores of 21-1, 5-3 and 14-6 and avoided the sweep with a 6-3 win in game two Saturday. Like the Orediggers, they come into this weekend losers of six of their last eight contests.
At the plate, Jessia Isbell leads the way with a .375 batting average and has driven in seven while scoring 11 and stealing four bases. Mya Chacon is one of three Rangers with double digit steals this year, going 12-15 on the basepaths while batting .373. Olivia Wick is batting .306 with a .484 slugging percentage thanks to two doubles and three home runs as she has driven in 11, scored 15 and is 10-12 in steal attempts. Ariana Ybarra is just shy of the .300 mark as she is batting .297 with three doubles and a team-leading two triples with 11 RBI of her own and 17 runs scored with going 18-20 in stolen bases.
Abby Larsen also has 11 RBI this season and is batting .273 with two doubles and a home run while Morgan Norris has been the main power provider for RU, leading the team with six doubles and five home runs on her way to 19 RBI while batting .272. Isabella Porter and Miia Moore are also ones to watch, with Porter posting three doubles and two home runs with four steals and Moore going 7-8 on the bases.
The Rangers have no shortage of arms in the circle, with eight different players seeing time this season but none having thrown more than 36 innings. Hallie Crappell leads the staff with a 3-3 record and a 3.79 ERA in eight games with six starts, spinning 35.2 innings and striking out 12 against 15 walks with a .257 BAA. Eliza Legge follows with a mark of 2-3 this season and a 6.21 ERA in 33.1 innings with 18 strikeouts in nine outings with four starts. Sophia Garcia is 1-1 in seven appearances with a pair of starts and has a 5.04 ERA in 25 innings with a .271 BAA while Vanessa Candito is 3-2 in seven outings with five starts for 28.2 innings and leads the team with 21 strikeouts and carries a 6.91 ERA.
Caitlyn Potts has worked 17 innings and struggled with walks, issuing 14 with just one strikeout this season as she is 0-5 in six games with three starts and has an ERA of 6.35. Lat year's ace Kylie Harpman has struggled this season, going 0-3 with an ERA above 10 in seven appearances with six starts for 25.2 innings with14 walks over own to just three strikeouts. Ava Edwards is 0-3 in three outings for six innings while Carmen O'Connor rounds out the staff with four appearances for five innings.
As a team, Regis is batting .276 with a .345 on-base percentage and a .378 slugging percentage and while being -80 in run differential, are second the league with 62 stolen bases. Their pitching staff carries a 6.64 ERA and has issued 124 free passes and struck out 67 while opponents has hit .329 against them. Defensively they are fielding .949 with 39 errors in 29 games.
SERIES HISTORY
Regis leads the all-time series with Mines 111-41 and is 49-17 when playing at home in Denver. Last season's series, scheduled to be played on RU's campus, was shifted to MSU Denver due to a mid-March snowstorm and shorted to two games. The Rangers took game one 6-2 before Mines rallied for a wild 11-9 win in game two, while the third meeting of the season in the RMAC Tournament saw Regis win 4-2 in the opening round on their way to ultimately winning the title. Over the last 10 meetings, the Orediggers are 2-8 and are looking for their first win at Regis in their first trip down I-70 since the 2019 season.
ON DECK
The second leg of the final eight-game road trip of the season for the Orediggers sees them head north next weekend to Spearfish to take on the upstarts of the RMAC this season Black Hills State in a four-game set to end the month of March.
