GOLDEN, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines produced strong early-season results as it hosted the Mines Midweek Meet at Stermole Track on Thursday.
The Orediggers invited in MSU Denver and Colorado for an unscored tri-meet, and competitors took full advantage of ideal conditions to break a pair of program records and set numerous personal bests on the day.
The highlight of the afternoon field events was the women's hammer throw where the Mines program record went down twice thanks to
Abbi Gillespie and
Jennifer Jarnagin. Gillespie bombed a 57.51m throw on the very first attempt of the competition to best teammate
Kitt Rupar's previous record of 56.42m set last May; on Jarnagin's fifth throw, she went even further, hitting 57.74m as the pair went 1-2 in the event. The pair now sit atop the RMAC and rank #2 and #3 in NCAA Division II early this outdoor season with their NCAA provisional marks.
That was one of a number of standout performances for the Mines throwers starting in the discus, where
Holden Murphy won the men's competition with an NCAA-provisional 51.04m, the new #2 throw in program history.
Franklin Rambo set his PR for a second-place 47.08,
Cade Whish was fourth at 42.81m, and
Keaton Reiman's collegiate-best 40.53m was fifth.
Hayden Swim finished ninth (34.65m) and
Vaughn Hafner 10th (33.08m). Murphy set another NCAA-provisional mark to win the hammer throw at 59.09m, while Swim's personal-best 49.40m was second and both Reiman (40.47m) and
Kolby Denke (39.58m) had collegiate bests to place fourth and fifth, respectively.
In addition to the women's hammer success, Rupar won the discus with an NCAA-provisional 46.12m best, with
Audrey Ott finishing fifth (37.94m) and Gillespie sixth (34.80m). Jarnagin won the shot put with a 12.08m mark ahead of Gillespie's 10.07m in third.
On the track,
Everett Delate reset his program 110m hurdles record in 13.81 seconds, the third-fastest time in D-II this season as the indoor 60m hurdles national silver medalist edged his previous best of 13.85 set at last year's NCAA Championships.
Coulton Chan ran 14.81 to take second in the event. In the 400m hurdles,
Elijah Quinby ran a personal-best 53.82 for second and
Mark Leoni was third at 58.33. In the women's hurdles,
Avery Wright ran a new PR of 14.61 to win the 100m event as
Lisa Sutherland was third in 14.83;
Allison Comer ran an NCAA-provisional 1:01.37, only 17-hundreths off her program record, to open her season in second place.
Aani Hardesty was fifth in 1:04.37.
The Mines 4x100 relay of
Nick Stade,
Jathan Busby,
Spencer Cedrun, and
Tegan Daughters put together the third-fastest time in Mines history - and quickest since 1996 - as they ran 41.49.
Tim Thompson took care of business in the 800m with an at-altitude 1:50.36, which converts to an NCAA-provisional 1:49.54 at sea-level for the third-fastest performance in D-II this season. It marked Thompson's outdoor career best, taking him to #3 all-time at Mines.
Owen Schneider ran a PR of 1:53.11 for second, and
Aiden Bram was sixth in 2:00.78.
Avary Catchings, paced by teammate
Grace Galvin, ran a strong 2:14.38 to win the women's 800m.
Tegan Daughters won the men's 200m dash in 21.46, the third-fastest performance in program history and Mines' fastest since 2018;
Jathan Busby also notched a top-10 performance with a fifth-place 21.73, and
Liam Currie finished eighth (22.23) a spot ahead of
Ollie Sehr (22.29).
Spencer Cedrun ran 12th (22.90),
Prince Owusu-Ansah was 13th (23.20), and
Austin Schmidt 14th (23.30). In the women's 200m,
Maya Evans ran a new personal-best 25.76 to finish fifth.
After breaking the long-standing indoor 400m record this winter,
Jonah Fallon opened his outdoor campaign with Mines' fastest lap around the oval since 2005 as he cruised to an NCAA-provisional 47.01-second win. Currie ran fourth in 48.86 with Sehr fifth (49.54), Schmidt sixth (50.10), and Owusu-Ansah seventh (50.90).
In an all-Mines pole vault to start the meet,
Aidan Bennett and
Noah Kelly topped the standings at 4.80m with Bennett first on misses;
Shane Conley got over 4.65m as did
Kai Miller for third and fourth. The women's vault was also all Orediggers with
Dale Thompson's NCAA-provisional 3.80m topping the field.
Arabella Chen's all-venues best 3.50m was second with
Taylor Hindman and
Madeline Obuchowski each clearing 3.35m.
Vaughn Hafner cleared 1.91m for third in the high jump, and Stade was fourth over 1.86m. In the long jump, Stade hit 6.70m for fifth and Hafner was a spot behind at 6.23m. Jayden Eaton was the women's high jump runner-up as she cleared two bars ending on 1.46m. Fresh off her triple jump podium at the NCAA Indoor Championships,
Claire Kintzley set her new career-best in the long jump with her second-place 5.68m as Sutherland was third (5.49m) and Wright fourth (5.02m).
Mines will continue its weekend with a trio of distance runners competing at the Chuck Haering Invitational in Pueblo on Friday morning.
