LAST WEEK
Mines' distance runners made the most of their trip to the Bay Area with a pair of program records and multiple nationally-elite times set at the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Classic. At Stanford,
Grace Strongman shattered the Mines 1,500m record with the NCAA #11 time of 4:22.68, and
Emily LaMena broke the steeplechase record in 10:21.58 with
Margaux Basart running 10:28.71 for the NCAA #4 and #5 times, respectively.
Logan Bocovich and
Paul Knight all but punched their NCAA tickets in the 10,000m running the #2 time for Bocovich (28:25.38) and #4 for Knight (28:38.87) while
Max Bonenberger ran the D-II #3 steeplechase performance of 8:49.13. At San Francisco State,
Lexi Herr and
Callen Nash hit big PRs to set the #11 and #14 5,000m times of the season in D-II.
IN THE POLLS
Mines was a big mover in this week's USTFCCCA Outdoor Ratings Index with the women jumping to #9 and men to #12 on the strength of last weekend's distance performances.
SPARKS, POTRYKUS, RAMSEY-RUTLEDGE, WRIGHT TOP ALL-RMAC INDOOR AWARDS
Head Coach
Matt Sparks was named the men's and women's coach of the year,
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge the co-women's track athlete of the year, and
Avery Wright the women's field athlete of the year to headline the 2025 All-RMAC teams for the indoor track & field season announced April 1. Mines accumulated 38 all-RMAC honors in total, with four Orediggers -
Allison Comer (60m hurdles, 400m),
Emily LaMena (3K, 5K),
Loic Scomparin (3K, 5K), and
Avery Wright (pentathlon, 60m hurdles, shot put) - recording multiple honors.Â
In the Academic All-RMAC awards announced April 8,
Hunter Potrykus was the men's academic athlete of the year to lead 42 total Oredigger honorees. Potrykus was one of four First-Team Academic All-RMAC selections for the Mines men along with
Everett Delate,
Jonah Fallon, and
Loic Scomparin, while the women garnered five first-teamers in
Margaux Basart,
Emily LaMena,
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge,
Grace Strongman, and
Dale Thompson. The Orediggers' nine total first-team honorees led the RMAC.
MINES MEN TOP PROGRAM OF THE YEAR STANDINGS
The Mines men were first and the women fifth after the indoor season in the USTFCCCA's Program of the Year standings announced last week. The award combines NCAA team finishes in all three seasons - cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field - to crown the best overall program nationally each spring. Teams get the same number of points as their finish, and the Mines men lead the standings with four points (first in cross country, third indoors) and the women are fifth with 16 (fifth in cross country, 11th indoors). It marks the Mines men's lowest point total through the first two seasons after they notched their best-ever NCAA Indoor finish earlier this month.
SPARKS, VAN SICKLE WIN REGIONAL COACHING HONORS
Mines head coach
Matt Sparks and middle distance coach
Scott Van Sickle earned the USTFCCCA's South Central Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year awards, respectively, on March 21. Sparks, in his 12th year as the Orediggers' head coach, led the men's team to a best-ever third-place finish at the 2025 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, earning First-Team All-America honors in six events including three silver medals. Mines also finished in second at the RMAC Indoor Championships despite scoring its most points ever with 160, winning six men's events. Van Sickle guided the Oredigger middle distance runners to a resurgent 2025 season, coaching new program records in the 400m, 4x400 relay, and distance medley relay. His runners contributed greatly to the Orediggers' RMAC and NCAA success as
Jonah Fallon and
Tim Thompson won the RMAC titles at 400m and 800m, respectively, and the DMR finished on the NCAA podium in fifth place.Â
RECORD SETTERS
Program records continue to fall for Mines, and the 2025 Oredigger squad now includes 17 active individual recordholders, plus two relays. The newest names on the list are
