Wright Resets Pentathlon Mark To Lead Mines

- Avery Wright reset her program pentathlon record to lead a strong Saturday for Colorado School of Mines at the Kit Mayer Classic.

The Orediggers took full advantage of a field loaded with Division I competition to set numerous personal bests and NCAA provisional marks, winning five events along the way.

Wright built on a strong day 1 of the heptathlon with a 5.34m long jump, 36.02m javelin, and a 2:29.38 800m to score 5,057 points, the first Oredigger to surpass 5,000 points, as she won the event; her total puts her 12th on the national list this season. Wright's previous program record was 4,931 set at the 2024 RMAC Championships, and she also broke the Stermole Track event record by 10 points. Meanwhile, Lisa Sutherland scored a career-high 4,573 points as she hit 5.50m in the long jump, 29.33m in the javelin, and 2:37.21 in the 800m; it marks a 300+ point personal-best for the sophomore, who moves up to #3 all-time at Mines in the multi event. 

Freshman Vaughn Hafner won the decathlon with a great day 2, compiling 6,063 points in his debut to move to #6 all-time at Mines in the event. Hafner had a strong start to the day, running 16.78 in the 110m hurdles and marking 38.49m in the discus before clearing 3.35m in the pole vault. Nick Stade finished fourth with 4,001 points which included a 31.00m discus and 5:20.80 1,500m among his top-scoring events of the day.

Franklin Rambo went over 17 meters outdoors for the first time to place fourth as the top D-II competitor in the men's shot put, touching 17.33m on his third attempt. Holden Murphy also hit an outdoor PR of 16.48m for seventh, while Keaton Reiman finished 13th (14.52m), Hayden Swim 16th (14.08m), and Cade Whish 20th (13.84m). In the discus, Murphy's 48.52m was good for second place while Rambo threw 43.95m for 12th, Whish a personal-best 43.78m for 13th, and Reiman a personal-best 43.25m for 15th. 

Kitt Rupar won the women's shot put with a 14.47m third attempt, topping a field that included four D-I throwers. In the women's discus, Rupar again led the Orediggers with a fifth-place 45.57m best as Abbi Gillespie placed 15th with her PR of 35.74m. 

On the track, Brock Drengenberg ran a blazing 1:50.48 to win the 800m in an NCAA-provisional time that converts to the #11 performance in D-II this season. Owen Schneider ran a collegiate-best 1:52.83 for sixth, while Alberto Campa was 10th in 1:53.79 and Shalom Trowbridge ran 1:54.02 for 11th. In the women's 800, Avary Catchings clocked 2:14.92 for fifth while Imani Fernandez-Gorbea was seventh in 2:16.76 making her season debut. 

Everett Delate won the 110m hurdles with a 14.20 into a headwind, with Coulton Chan fifth in 14.78 seconds. Elijah Quinby topped Mines' 400m hurdles entrants running a sixth-place 52.95 with Delate ninth in 53.82 and Mark Leoni 13th in 57.67. Allison Comer also doubled in the women's hurdles, placing fourth in the 100m in a new personal-best 14.90 seconds, then running 1:01.71 for sixth in the 400m hurdles. Aani Hardesty ran a 1:02.33 for 10th in that event, as well. 

Jathan Busby ran the fastest Mines 100m dash since 2018 as he crossed in 10.72 seconds under legal wind; Tegan Daughters also set a PR with a 10th-place 10.81 showing. Spencer Cedrun ran 11.19 for 24th. Daughters would equal his personal-best 200m to finish sixth in that event in 21.46, with Busby 13th in 21.78 seconds, Cedrun 34th at 22.92, Austin Schmidt 38th in 23.19, and Prince Owusu-Ansah 39th at 23.22.

Liam Currie led four Orediggers in the 400m as he ran a ninth-place 48.80 - the top D-II time - as Schmidt finished 16th in 49.43, Waylon Weeks was 24th in 50.96, and Owusu-Ansah finished 25th in 51.59. Andreas O'Malley was the lone Oredigger in the 1,500m and finished third as the top D-II runner in 3:57 flat.

The 5,000m closed the meet with Ella Kenly finishing 15th (19:29.93) and Maria Forster 16th (19:31.89) in the women's race, and Jeremy Gillett finishing 17th in 16:05.47 and Gael McLain Martinez 20th in 16:25.75 in the men's race, with both making their debuts at the distance.

Jaysen Eaton cleared 1.55m for 11th in the high jump, making three bars in the competition for her collegiate all-venues best. Claire Kintzley finished eighth in the long jump at 5.54m.

The Orediggers are back at home next weekend to host the Mines Pre-Conference at Stermole Track.
