Bryan Clay Invite

OREDIGGERS SWITCH UP SCHEDULE FOR EASTER WEEKEND
Colorado's unpredictable spring weather has caused Colorado School of Mines track & field to switch up its weekend plans, canceling the Mines Pre-Conference Meet and instead hosting the one-day Mines Midweek Meet #2 on Thursday, April 17. Meanwhile, the Orediggers will also take part in the three-day Bryan Clay Invitational in southern California starting Wednesday. Both meets serve as a final tune-up for Mines to get qualifying in for next week's RMAC Championships, which will be hosted at Stermole Track.

FAN INFORMATION
Fans coming to the Mines Midweek Meet #2 are reminded that they must pay for parking on campus. Parking is available in Lot K (next to Stermole Soccer Stadium) and the parking garage at 1350 Maple St. There is no admission charge for the meet.

LIVE COVERAGE
The Mines Midweek Meet #2 will have live results available at minesathletics.com/tracklive. The Bryan Clay Invitational will stream live for FloTrack subscribers, and live results are also available at the links above.

THE SCHEDULE
The Mines Midweek Meet #2 is tentatively scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday on the track with a morning session lasting until noon. Field events will begin with the javelin at 10 a.m.; the high jump and pole vault, set for late afternoon, may move to Steinhauer Fieldhouse if weather conditions warrant.

The three-day Bryan Clay begins Wednesday with a lone Oredigger, Loic Scomparin, competing in the 10,000m. On Thursday, seven Orediggers will take on 5,000m heats (times announced Tuesday night) along with Tim Thompson in the 800m at a time to be determined, while on Friday, the Orediggers' shorter distance competitors will go in events including the 110m and 400m hurdles, 400m, and 1500m.

LAST WEEK
Mines turned in some great performances as they hosted the Kit Mayer Classic last weekend. Friday was a day for the throwers as both Jennifer Jarnagin and Abbi Gillespie surpassed 60 meters in the hammer throw to rank #1 and #2 all-time at Mines in the event, while Holden Murphy also went over 60 meters in the men's hammer with his personal best. Kolby Denke improved on his program #2 all-time javelin performance throwing 61.69m. On the track, Dawson Gunn led four men getting NCAA provisional times in the 10,000m, while Callen Nash set her own in the women's race. On Saturday, Avery Wright reset her program heptathlon record, winning the event with a facility-record 5,057 points. Vaughn Hafner won the decathlon with the #6 all-time Mines performance, and Franklin Rambo set his outdoor PR in the shot put at 17.33 meters. Brock Drengenberg highlighted Mines' Saturday on the track with an NCAA-provisional 1:50.48 800m time.

OREDIGGER WOMEN HIT HIGHEST-EVER RANKING
This week's USTFCCCA Ratings Index release saw big moves for Mines as the men jumped up seven spots to #5, and the women reached their highest-ever outdoor ranking up three places to #6. The ranking is based off of the national performance list, where the Orediggers hold a combined 44 NCAA provisional performances (26 men, 18 women).

SPARKS, POTRYKUS, RAMSEY-RUTLEDGE, WRIGHT TOP ALL-RMAC INDOOR AWARDS
Head Coach Matt Sparks was named the men's and women's coach of the year, Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge the co-women's track athlete of the year, and Avery Wright the women's field athlete of the year to headline the 2025 All-RMAC teams for the indoor track & field season announced April 1. Mines accumulated 38 all-RMAC honors in total, with four Orediggers - Allison Comer (60m hurdles, 400m), Emily LaMena (3K, 5K), Loic Scomparin (3K, 5K), and Avery Wright (pentathlon, 60m hurdles, shot put) - recording multiple honors.

In the Academic All-RMAC awards announced April 8, Hunter Potrykus was the men's academic athlete of the year to lead 42 total Oredigger honorees. Potrykus was one of four First-Team Academic All-RMAC selections for the Mines men along with Everett Delate, Jonah Fallon, and Loic Scomparin, while the women garnered five first-teamers in Margaux Basart, Emily LaMena, Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge, Grace Strongman, and Dale Thompson. The Orediggers' nine total first-team honorees led the RMAC.

MINES MEN TOP PROGRAM OF THE YEAR STANDINGS
The Mines men were first and the women fifth after the indoor season in the USTFCCCA's Program of the Year standings announced last week. The award combines NCAA team finishes in all three seasons - cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field - to crown the best overall program nationally each spring. Teams get the same number of points as their finish, and the Mines men lead the standings with four points (first in cross country, third indoors) and the women are fifth with 16 (fifth in cross country, 11th indoors). It marks the Mines men's lowest point total through the first two seasons after they notched their best-ever NCAA Indoor finish earlier this month.

SPARKS, VAN SICKLE WIN REGIONAL COACHING HONORS
Mines head coach Matt Sparks and middle distance coach Scott Van Sickle earned the USTFCCCA's South Central Head Coach and Assistant Coach of the Year awards, respectively, on March 21. Sparks, in his 12th year as the Orediggers' head coach, led the men's team to a best-ever third-place finish at the 2025 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, earning First-Team All-America honors in six events including three silver medals. Mines also finished in second at the RMAC Indoor Championships despite scoring its most points ever with 160, winning six men's events. Van Sickle guided the Oredigger middle distance runners to a resurgent 2025 season, coaching new program records in the 400m, 4x400 relay, and distance medley relay. His runners contributed greatly to the Orediggers' RMAC and NCAA success as Jonah Fallon and Tim Thompson won the RMAC titles at 400m and 800m, respectively, and the DMR finished on the NCAA podium in fifth place.

RECORD SETTERS
Program records continue to fall for Mines, and the 2025 Oredigger squad now includes 17 active individual recordholders, plus two relays. Jennifer Jarnagin (weight throw) and Avery Wright (heptathlon) reset their own marks last week, while the newest names on the list are Emily LaMena, who set the 3,000m steeplechase mark, and Grace Strongman, who broke the 1,500m record earlier in April at Stanford. For the men, Loic Scomparin (3K), Delate (60H, 110H), Jonah Fallon (400), the men's 4x400 and DMR, Holden Murphy (WT), Franklin Rambo (SP), and Hunter Potrykus (PV) are all atop their events, while LaMena, Strongman, Avery Wright (60H and pentathlon), Margaux Basart (3K), Ramsey-Rutledge (indoor 5K, outdoor 10K), Kitt Rupar (SP), Claire Kintzley (TJ), Jarnagin (WT) and Hayley Rayburn (PV) have their names on the women's record wall. Allison Comer also owns the outdoor 400 hurdles record set last season.

LOOKING AHEAD
Mines will host the 2025 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Stermole Track on April 25-27.
