PUEBLO, Colo. - Four podium finishers - led by women's 10,000m silver medalist
Jenna Ramsey-Rutledge and men's bronze medalist
Logan Bocovich - highlighted the opening day of the 2025 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Colorado School of Mines.
Holden Murphy took fifth in the men's hammer throw and
Jeremiah Vaille dug deep to finish eighth in the men's 10,000m to add to the Orediggers' First-Team All-America finishes. Through four events, the Mines men are in fourth place with 11 points, while the women are sixth on eight points.
The women's 10K turned into a two-woman duel between Ramsey-Rutledge and Adams State's Brianna Robles as the Oredigger senior drafted Robles for 23 laps before taking the front spot at the bell; Robles ultimately had the kick to win as Ramsey-Rutledge crossed in 34:45.62, 17 seconds clear of third place.
The men's race was broken apart early and the five Orediggers found themselves in different spots of opportunity. Bocovich led a pack that methodically clawed back the second-place runner through the back half of the race, and that paid off for Bocovich with a third-place 29:52.46 time. Vaille arrived at the podium from a different direction, running as low as 16th a quarter of the way through the race and 12th with two kilometers to go before finding late energy to pick off runners and finish eighth in 30:27.63.
Paul Knight was a spot behind in 30:40.22 and
Braden Struhs rallied late to finish 12th in 30:53.06, both for second-team all-America status, with
Loic Scomparin closing 18th in 31:48.10.Â
Murphy highlighted Mines' day in the field with a new Mines record to finish fifth in the hammer throw. The graduate transfer closed his career on the podium, throwing 61.54m on his first attempt before a 62.20m bomb on his second throw to assure his finals spot; he didn't improve after that despite surpassing 60 meters twice more, but his mark was good enough for a five-spot improvement on his #10 seed.
In track preliminaries, it was a great night for Mines steeplechasers who sent three of four entries through to Friday's finals.
Emily LaMena topped the women's qualifying times with an impressive 10:33.59 run, while
Max Bonenberger ran the second-fastest men's time of 9:09.01 to move through along with
Alex Shaw, who qualified on time at 9:18.25.
Margaux Basart finished 17th in the women's steeplechase in 11:12.64.
In the men's 1,500m,
Brock Drengenberg finished 15th in 3:54.90 and
Alberto Campa 20th in 3:57.71.
Grace Strongman was 18th in the women's prelims in 4:42.57.
Allison Comer ran 1:02.77 for 21st in the women's 400m hurdle prelims.Â
In the women's hammer throw,
Jennifer Jarnagin finished 11th - a second-team all-America spot - with a 54.74m first throw, while
Abbi Gillespie came in 19th at 51.92m.Â
The meet continues Friday with the Orediggers competing in finals in the discus and steeplechase, and prelims in the 800m and 110m hurdles.
