FORT COLLINS, Colo. -
Alberto Campa all but assured himself of a nationals spot to lead Colorado School of Mines in last-chance qualifying at the Doug Max Invite at Colorado State on Saturday.
Campa entered the day on the bubble ranked #21 nationally in the 1,500m - with the top 22 ultimately making the NCAA field - and he did the work to improve upon that in a very quick first heat filled with D-I competition, running a sixth-place 3:47.26. That time converts to a sea-level 3:42.12 to move him to #8 on the D-II performance list. Campa was one of seven runners under the meet record in his heat.
Andreas O'Malley ran a 13th-place 3:52.78, improving his season- and collegiate-best by a half-second.
In the men's pole vault,
Aidan Bennett and
Noah Kelly both improved on their season-best marks clearing 5.00m, with that height representing an all-venues career best for Bennett. That puts the pair just outside of nationals qualifying at #24 in D-II.
Kai Miller cleared 4.70m for sixth place, while alumnus
Hunter Potrykus, competing unattached, won the competition vaulting 5.10m.
Dale Thompson cleared 3.75m for third place in the women's pole vault.
In the men's hammer throw,
Holden Murphy surpassed 60 meters for the fourth time this season to be the top D-II thrower in a seventh-place 60.92m. Murphy later threw 16.58m for ninth in the shot put, a spot behind
Franklin Rambo with his 16.92m best, while Cade Wish was only a centimeter off his PR with a 14th-place 14.80m mark. Murphy's 49.81m best led Mines in the discus as he finished sixth, with Whish 13th (44.84m) and Rambo 18th (42.98m).
In the women's hammer,
Jennifer Jarnagin threw 54.54m for seventh,
Kitt Rupar 51.94m for eighth, and
Abbi Gillespie 51.62m for ninth.
The Orediggers have two more last-chance meets on next weekend's schedule as they split up to head to Azusa Pacific and Nebraska-Kearney.
