LEÓN, Spain – Former Colorado School of Mines men's basketball standout
Majok Deng will take the next step of his career as he heads overseas to Spain to begin his professional journey after signing a contract with Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa Baloncesto.
A two-year graduate transfer at Mines who played four seasons at Division I Pepperdine, Deng helped lead Mines to a 29-5 record on their way to sweeping the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular and tournament titles for just the third time in program history during the 2024-25 season before advancing to the title game of the NCAA Division II South Central Regional.
Along with a pair of All-American honors, Deng was named RMAC Player of the Year, First Team All-RMAC selection, RMAC Tournament Most Valuable Player, D2 CCA South Central Region Player of the Year and First Team All-District by the NABC. The leading scorer for Mines this season at 14.9 PPG, Deng shot .466/.379/.886 with a career-high 132 rebounds, 29 steals, 20 assists and eight blocks in 23.9 MPG and was the only player to start in all 34 games. 22 times he scored in double digits and went north of 20 nine times, highlighted by his season-best 33 against Adams State on February 1 in which he went 9-14 from the floor, 4-7 from three and 11-11 at the free throw line with five rebounds in 24 minutes. He also went for 22 and 23 in the semifinals and finals of the RMAC Tournament against Black Hills State and Regis and dropped 15 against Dallas Baptist in the South Central regional final last Tuesday. For his career, Deng scored 1,072 points in a Mines uniform and started each of the 67 games he played in, averaging 16.0 points and 3.6 rebounds in 24.3 minutes per night while shooting .453/.409/.860. He pulled in 244 rebounds and registered 46 assists, 43 steals and 12 blocks, recording career marks in rebounding and steals this season. Additionally, Deng penned his name into the Mines records books, finishing eighth all-time in three-point percentage and fourth all-time in free throw percentage while his performance at the line this season slots him in for the seventh all-time.
Cultural y Deportiva Leonesa Baloncesto is the basketball section of the namesake club Cultural Leonosa or La Cultural, a Spanish football team based in León in the autonomous community of Castile and León. While the football club was established in 1923, the basketball wing was founded in 2022 by merging local teams CB Reino de León and Basket León following the dissolution of Baloncesto León in 2012. The team went 18-8 in their debut season in 2022-23, finishing fourth Liga EBA/Tercera FEB before going 27-3 in the 2023-24 season, winning the division and earning a promotion to the LEB Plata/Segunda FEB. Cultural Leonosa plays their home games at the Palacio de los Deportes de León.
