The Colorado School of Mines Men's Club Soccer team faced a challenging weekend on the road, opening Friday night against CU Boulder A before traveling to Colorado Springs on Saturday to take on Air Force.
Friday's contest in Boulder was a defensive battle. The Orediggers stayed organized in the back and looked to strike on the counter, but a late penalty kick awarded to CU Boulder proved decisive, as the hosts converted and held on for a narrow 1-0 win.
Mines bounced back the next afternoon against Air Force. The Orediggers opened the scoring with a quickly taken free kick from outside the box. The Falcons equalized in the second half on a cross and appeared poised to pull ahead when awarded a penalty kick, but the shot clanged off the post. Mines capitalized moments later, as Robert Mabbs headed home the game-winner off a corner kick to secure a 2-1 victory.
