Pair of Early Goals Not Enough As #1 Orediggers Draw With #20 Falcons

SEATTLE, Wash. – Looking to close out non-conference action on a positive note, the #1 Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team returned to action at Interbay Stadium Saturday in a Top 25 battle with #20 Seattle Pacific. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead over the Falcons (2-1-2), the Orediggers (3-1-1) looked poised to come out on top but a pair of second half goals including a late own goal forced Mines to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Seattle Pacific had the first crack at goal in the match in the third minute as Maya Parman took a shot against Allie Lundgren but came away empty-handed. Mines had their first looks of the match in the minutes that followed with Anna Gessner leading the charge as her first look of the day in 21st minute banged off the crossbar before being collected on the rebound by Bella Campos who finished off with the easy goal to take the lead.

Late in the first half, the Orediggers doubled their lead as Campos converted her first penalty kick of the season. Seattle Pacific, look to clear the ball out of their own end, turned it over on the far sideline as a pass back inside of the penalty area to Campos swathe junior bumped from behind and sent to the turf in clear sight of the official. A penalty was awarded as Campos didn't miss and went near post to make it a 2-0 lead.

Parman continued to lead the offense for SPU down the stretch heading to halftime, but failed to get the Falcons on the board as Lundgren saved the final shot of the period in the 40th minute to keep it a two-goal game heading into halftime.

Action was slow to begin the second half with Mines not managing to manufacture many buildups offensively, while Seattle Pacific showed signs of breaking through. After Lundgren made a save against Kayla Wallace in the 56th minute, Taylor Krueger took advantage of a defensive miscommunication by the Orediggers. A turnover near midfield saw the ball played toward the Mines goal where it was headed up by a defender as Lundgren was coming out to attempt to secure it. Krueger was able to capitalize, catching Lundgren out of position and tucking a shot inside the far post to get on the board at 2-1.

Up one with 20 minutes remaining, Mines looked poised to come away with the result as while shots continued to stack up for SPU, none managed to find the net as the defense dug their heels in.

Unfortunately for the Orediggers, disaster struck in the 88th minute as a cross by Wallace from the near side caromed off a defender and into goal just inside the post to level the score at 2-2 with just 2:12 left in the match.

After the restart, Mines scrambled to recover the lead but found themselves unable to do so as time expired on a draw between two ranked opponents.
