Orediggers B-Side Gain Valuable Experience in 10s Matches at UNC
The Colorado School of Mines women's rugby B-side opened their season on the road in Greeley, taking on the University of Northern Colorado in a developmental 10s doubleheader. While the Bears took both matches (36–0 and 22–0), the day was marked by growth, resilience, and promising debuts for a roster filled with first-time players.
Rain Slisher, a veteran fly-half, captained the side and provided steady leadership throughout both contests. Despite a tough start in the opening match, the Orediggers showed noticeable improvement in the second, adjusting their defensive shape and creating more attacking opportunities.
Simone Hanibal highlighted the offensive effort with well-struck drop kicks that energized the squad.
On defense,
Lauren Frohlich led the way as the team's top tackler, while
Sam Noesen, Sophia Kassow, Saydi Sharpeta, and Stella Paxson each delivered strong individual moments that demonstrated the potential of Mines' developing depth. After injuries forced changes at scrum half,
Piper Bartels stepped in with determination, keeping the attack organized under pressure.
With the majority of players competing in their first-ever rugby match, the experience was invaluable. The Orediggers left the pitch with confidence in their progress and excitement for what's to come.
The UNC matches embodied the purpose of the B-side: building depth, developing new talent, and welcoming more players into Mines' growing rugby community. With every rep, the Orediggers are laying the foundation for the program's long-term success.
