Mines Men’s Rugby Faces Tough Test Against NMT

9/29/2025 9:36:00 AM

The Colorado School of Mines Men's Rugby Club hosted New Mexico Institute of Science and Technology on September 27 in Golden, falling 13–42 in a physical matchup. Despite the final score, the Orediggers showed flashes of strong play and continue to build valuable experience early in the season.

Mines came out with energy, striking first with an early try to grab the lead and keep momentum in the opening stages. At halftime, the Orediggers trailed just 5–14 after battling through a series of defensive stands. In the second half, Jonathan Sanford connected on a penalty kick to add three more points, and the squad powered in another try to keep fighting until the final whistle.

While NMT's size and physicality ultimately proved the difference, Mines sees this match as an opportunity to regroup and refocus. The Orediggers know improved conditioning, organization, and consistency will be key as they progress through the fall schedule.

This performance highlighted both the challenges of taking on a dominant opponent and the growth still ahead for the program. With lessons learned, Mines is committed to pushing forward and preparing to be at their best when it matters most — competing for another shot at the Division III national stage.
