Mines Starts Winter Classic With Strong Performances

GOLDEN, Colo. -
Multiple NCAA-provisional performances highlighted the opening day of the Mines Winter Classic & Multi at Steinhauer Fieldhouse.

The men's distance medley relay of Max Bonenberger, Liam Currie, Tim Thompson, and Brock Drengenberg clocked 10:03.04, an NCAA-provisional time. Charlie Welch paced out the 1,200m leg. Meanwhile, the women, running against a strong Western Colorado relay, turned in an NCAA-provisional 12:03.81, the #10 all-time performance in Mines history. Imani Fernandez-Gorbea, Aani Hardesty, Avary Catchings, and Lexi Herr were on the baton. 

The 5,000m completed distance night on the track led by Cody Wyman, who ran 15:00.59 to win. Paced by alumnus Andrew Kaye, Braden Struhs clocked 15:12.38 with Rowan Nicholas at 15:19.46 and Gael McClain Martinez coming in at 15:58.45. The women's race, paced out by former Oredigger Molly Maksin, saw Maria Forster take second in 18:53.71 with Kara Tokubo running 19:09.84 for fourth.

In Friday's field events, Aidan Bennett was the top collegian in the men's pole vault competition with an NCAA-provisional 5.12m, his new personal-best. Kai Miller got over 4.67m for sixth with Jay Peonio seventh at 4.52m. Taylor Hindman was second in the women's event with a 3.62m bar, with Madeline Obuchowski fourth (3.47m) and Arabella Chen eighth (3.32m). Violet Williams won in a 23-competitor long jump field, marking 5.92m - the #6 all-time performance in program history - while Thierry Asare was sixth in the men's competition hitting 6.91m. 

Freshman Jonah Pfender had a memorable debut in the shot put with a final toss of 16.28m to earn second place and the #6 spot on the Mines top-10 list. He was the top D-II competitor in the large field as he finished second overall ahead of Franklin Rambo in third (16.18m) and Keaton Reiman in fourth (a personal-best 15.47m) with Hayden Swim ninth at 13.85m. Violet Mazenko led Mines in the women's shot with a fifth-place (second among D-II throwers) 11.55m on her collegiate debut, while Harper Tuffly was 10th at 10.62m and Audrey Ott threw 10.30m for 14th. 

Nick Stade and Vaughn Hafner had strong starts to the heptathlon, with Stade scoring 2,821 points for second and Hafner 2,777 for fourth through four events. Stade started the day with a personal-best 6.98-second 60m time and added a 6.65m long jump, 11.17m shot put, and 1.82m high jump to his day; Hafner ran 7.29 in the 60, jumped 6.13m, threw a field-best of 14.12m in the shot put, and also cleared 1.82m in the high jump.

In Boston on the opening day of the John Thomas Terrier Classic, four Oredigger women were in action as Margaux Basart ran 9:45.02 in the 3,000m, while in the 5,000m, Gabi Boeckman clocked 17:01.84, Callen Nash 17:16.44, and Josie Mejia 17:23.93.

Saturday will see the Winter Classic start up again at 10 a.m., while several Oredigger men run the 5K in Boston at 7 p.m. ET.
