SALT LAKE CITY – The Colorado School of Mines volleyball team gave Head Coach
Jamie Magalei the 400th win of her career on Friday by sweeping past Westminster.
The milestone win featured a dominant effort by the Orediggers.
Jenna McLaughlin topped the list of highlights with 11 error-free kills on 22 attempts while adding eight total blocks and one service ace.
Francesca Nuzzo contributed 21 digs in just three sets of action while producing two service aces and seven assists.
Kaiya Gilbert proved utilitarian at setter, notching 21 assists, seven digs, four total blocks, four kills on .571 hitting, and one ace. Also notable were four total blocks from
Cadence McDonald, two service aces off the hand of
Sophia Davila, and eight kills courtesy of
Caroline Walden.
Mines (16-3, 7-2 RMAC) also pushed its streak of straight-set wins to nine which increased the program record in consecutive sets won to 27 as well. Westminster (3-17, 2-8 RMAC) did manage more kills than the Orediggers and matched their guests in assists. However, Mines won the service-ace game, 7-1, and dominated on the block, 14-2. That block, along with 51 digs, helped the Orediggers limit the Griffins to .119 on the attack. Mines finished the night converting at .265 on offense. Furthermore, with #1 Ferris State's five-setter at Davenport on Friday, the Orediggers now tout the longest active sweep streak in all of NCAA Division II.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite the history made, Friday's affair was relatively open and closed. Mines won the first set, 25-18, after six combined kills from McLaughlin and Walden along with 10 digs by Nuzzo. Gilbert and McLaughlin registered one solo block and one block assist each as part of five total blocks for the visitors. The second set was even more lopsided at 25-12. McLaughlin and Walden collected three more kills apiece. However, the highlight was a total of five service aces by the Orediggers. Mines capped the night with seven total blocks in the third frame which helped a 25-17 margin. McLaughlin finished strong by hammering down five more kills on nine attempts.
