Colorado School of Mines Club Esports continued its National Esports Collegiate Conference (NECC) season with a strong third week of competition, highlighted by victories from Valorant JV and Rocket League JV.

Both teams battled through closely contested series, with Valorant JV earning its first regular-season victory in a three-map thriller and Rocket League JV securing its second consecutive win in a seven-game showdown against Colorado Mesa. League of Legends JV had a scheduled bye week.

Valorant JV Rallies Past Washington State for First Victory

Mines Valorant JV picked up its first NECC regular-season victory Tuesday, Oct. 13, defeating Washington State University 2-1 in a dramatic three-map series.

The Orediggers entered the matchup looking to bounce back from consecutive losses to Cal State San Marcos and Utah State. Despite falling behind early, Mines demonstrated resilience throughout the series to improve to 1-2 in NECC competition.

The opening map on Haven began with Washington State taking a 7-5 halftime lead. After dropping the second-half pistol round, Mines struggled to regain momentum and eventually found itself trailing 10-6.

Facing a four-round deficit, the Orediggers mounted an impressive comeback, winning seven consecutive rounds behind strong post-plant defense to take the map 13-10.

The victory marked Mines' first map win of the regular season and gave the Orediggers their first series advantage.

Map 2 moved to Lotus, where Mines had shown considerable improvement during practice. Washington State again took a narrow 7-5 halftime lead before the teams traded rounds throughout the second half.

Junior Tucker Grubbs delivered one of the highlights of the series, securing three eliminations in a difficult 2-v-4 post-plant situation to keep Mines competitive.

Another memorable round saw both teams struggling economically, leading to an unusual standoff as Mines surrounded the Washington State players near Tree and prevented them from advancing.

Despite those moments, Washington State regained control late in the map, breaking a 10-10 tie to secure a 13-10 victory and force a deciding third map.

The series moved to Sunset, a map Mines had played only once in a ranked match and had not practiced as a team.

The lack of preparation did little to slow the Orediggers.

Mines opened with a strong performance, building a 4-1 lead before taking a 7-5 advantage into halftime. The Orediggers carried that momentum into the second half, winning the opening pistol round and extending their lead.

With Mines ahead 9-6, sophomore Jadon Beacham delivered the defining moment of the match, winning a 1-v-3 clutch to extend the advantage to 10-6.

The Orediggers never looked back, winning the remaining rounds to close out Sunset 13-6 and secure their first NECC series victory.
