Balanced Attack Powers Mines To 5-1 Win Over Adams State

ALAMOSA, Colo. – Picking up right where they left off Friday night, the Colorado School of Mines women's soccer team balanced attack saw three different goal scorers on their way to a 5-1 win in over Adams State. A third consecutive hat trick by Bella Campos to break the program's career points record, along with goals from Natalie Rouse and Sam Forde overwhelmed the Grizzlies (5-11-1, 1-10-0) as the Orediggers (11-3-3, 7-2-2) extended their winning streak to three matches.

Mines scored first for the 10th time this season in the 21st minute. Finley Ewald stole the ball away from the Grizzlies at midfield before playing one touch pass from the near side of the field to the top of the arc. Her pass was led perfectly in front of Bella Campos, as she shot it past goalkeeper Mariely Jimenez to the back post for the first goal of the match. Natalie Rouse doubled the lead moments later in the 23rd minute. A short corner from the far side saw Jordan Bowermaster take a long-range shot that was saved by Jimenez and momentarily cleared by Adams State. Caelan DeBolt gathered up the loose ball on the endline before passing off the Sam Forde inside the corner of the penalty area. Forde spun right and played a cross through a small gap between two defenders to Rouse, who was waiting on the back post for the finish and the goal.

The Orediggers nearly made it a three-goal contest in the 29th minute when an ASU defender took down Campos inside the penalty area. The ensuing PK by Campos was saved on the near post by Jimenez before rolling harmlessly out of play as the score held at 2-0 for the moment. Chances continued to mount for the Orediggers with three more corner kicks in the final 15 minutes, while Gaby Guerrero had a shot at goal in the 43rd minute saved by Jimenez as first half action concluded.

Campos atoned for the earlier PK miss as play resumed in the second half with a goal in the 55th minute. An errant pass by Adams State was picked off by Mines near midfield, with the ball being intercepted and immediately played ahead off the foot of Annelise Rojo. Campos, all alone amidst a group of ASU defenders, gathered the pass and took off toward goal, shooting back post from the top of the box and scoring against pleas of offsides by the defense.

Adams State broke up the shutout in the 64th minute when a defensive lapse by Mines allowed Sophia Miera a wide-open goal to shoot on to make it a 3-1 match. The Orediggers answered back with two goals in a span of 70 seconds in the 77th and 78th minutes. Forde led the sequence off with a header on the back post from a Bowermaster corner kick to make it 4-1. Campos completed a hat trick moments later as Mines won a loose ball on their side of the field, setting up Bowermaster for a long ball ahead up the far sideline. Campos scooped it up and turned inside, dribbling across the top of the penalty area before lazing a shot under the crossbar to make it a 5-1 match.

That score held for the final 12 minutes as both sides saw their reserves play out the final stretch. A last-minute shot from Shyla Kalpathy nearly made it 6-1, but instead banged away off the crossbar as time expired on a winning performance by a margin of four instead.
