Orediggers Fall To Cougars, 4-1

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines men's soccer team dropped a 4-1 result to Colorado Christian Sunday at Stermole Stadium. The Orediggers (0-9-2, 0-3-0) were first on the board, but three goals late in the opening period followed by a fourth in the closing minutes saw the Cougars (3-4-4, 2-1-0) get the result.

Pol Garcia Oliveras got Mines on the board in just the fourth minute with perhaps one of the most impressive goals of the season. After Noah Bills came up with the ball on defense, Garcia Oliveras took a pass from Murray Peart and raced more than 40 yards downfield through and past the CCU defense. With defenders closing in, the Spaniard fired a shot to the near post while sliding to the turf past the arms of Campbell Wolfgram for the goal.

The action through the middle part of the period was rather pedestrian, as Mines looked to be in control of things until a six-minute sequence at the end of the half. The Cougars scored three goals in a span of 5:38 to take the lead and control of the match. Benjamin Brown tied things in the 38th minute with a header off the crossbar and in for a goal on a cross from Rayce Haldy. Tiago Gomes then scored off a cross into the box headed down by Brown to take the lead 50 seconds later before Findlay Coleman teamed up with Haldy to make it 3-1 in the 44th minute.

Kaoru Kato and Garcia Oliveras each put a shot on frame to open the second half while Ashish Gurung banged one off the crossbar as Mines looked to rally. Garcia Oliveras and Peart continued to lead the charge as time wound down, with a pair of shots from the duo in the 69th minute getting a rise out of the crowd as the CCU defense was able to keep the ball in play. Scoring concluded in the 72nd minute when a misplayed ball by Mines deep in their own end led to a tap-in goal by Antonio Lugo. Both sides played out the stretch with their reserves with Zach MacDonald making two saves in the late going, but with the damage already done the Cougars took the result 4-1.
