Five Score As Orediggers Rout MSU Denver Sunday

GOLDEN, Colo. – In perhaps their strongest performance of the season, the Colorado School of Mines women's soccer completed a sweep of the weekend Sunday afternoon with a 6-0 win over MSU Denver. Five different players scored for the Orediggers (7-2-2, 3-1-1) in the winning effort while a stifling defense effort shutout the Roadrunners (2-6-4, 1-4-1) for the third time in the last four years.

The afternoon started rather pedestrian in the first half with the teams combining for just seven shots in the first half. Caelan DeBolt opened the scoring with a tap-in goal past Morgan Shirley off a beautiful pass from Bella Campos that split a pair of Roadrunner defenders in the 21st minute. That goal held up as the Orediggers took a 1-0 lead to the break.

The floodgates opened in the second half as Mines erupted for five goals over the final 45 minutes. Just 55 seconds into the period, Annelise Rojo headed home a crosser on the back post from Lindsay Jeans that saw Shirley dive off her line trying to punch it clear but failing to do so. Campos scored the next two goals in the 49th and 52nd minutes. Her first goal saw her take a ball from Bella Torres and drive past two defenders before splitting a third and shooting a ball through the hands of Shirley to the back post to make it 3-0. The second goal saw the Bellas team up again, with Torres playing a perfect pass to Campos between two defenders for a back post shot 12 yards out for the fourth goal of the afternoon.

Torres took her turn not even five minutes later in the 57th minute, teaming up with Jeans to make it 5-0. After being denied just a few moments earlier with a shot that was deflected off a defender and the back post, Torres took advantage of a second-chance play. After shot by Campos was blocked by a defender, Jeans came up with the rebound and slipped a pass to the freshman at the top of the arc for a left-footed finish on the near post to make it 5-0.

With the result well in hand, both sides emptied their benches down the stretch. Keira Garcia saved her only action of the day in the 71st minute while the Orediggers continued to pepper the Roadrunners with shots. Freshmen Haliya Jabel, Molly Elder and Shyla Kalpathy each had quality chances in a four-minute flurry, during which it looked as if Elder had scored with the ball in the hands of new keeper Kiley Hyde off a DeBolt corner kick, but with no whistle play continued. After rattling the woodwork, Elder finally found her mark in the 83rd minute, gathering a pass from Ariana Ahumada amidst two defenders before shooting inside the back post past Hyde to cap the scoring and put an exclamation point on a 6-0 win.
