Mines Club Baseball put together its strongest weekend of the fall season Sunday, sweeping Colorado State University Pueblo in a doubleheader at Long Lake Regional Park. The Orediggers captured the opener 7-3 before completing the sweep with a 12-7 victory in game two.
Coming off a three-game series at CU Boulder in which Mines earned its first victory of the season, the Orediggers carried that momentum home and combined timely hitting, aggressive baserunning and strong pitching to earn two more wins.
Mines Takes Opener, 7-3
Mines opened the afternoon with a 7-3 victory in seven innings behind a strong day at the plate from Matt Lang. Lang finished with two hits, scored three times and drove in three runs while adding a stolen base.
Zander Belland created additional pressure on the basepaths, recording two hits and scoring twice while stealing three bases. Charles Burrell added a pair of hits and scored a run as the Oredigger offense provided plenty of support for its pitching staff.
Roman Williams delivered another strong outing on the mound after previously throwing three scoreless innings against Colorado State earlier this fall. Williams worked four innings against CSU Pueblo, allowing three hits and just one earned run while striking out five.
Alex Guevara took over for the final three innings and continued his strong start to the season. Guevara surrendered only two hits and one earned run while striking out six, giving the Mines pitching duo 11 strikeouts across seven innings.
The combination helped Mines hold CSU Pueblo to three runs and secure its second victory of the fall.
Orediggers Complete Sweep With 12-7 Victory
Mines' offense found another gear in the second game, putting 12 runs on the board in a six-inning victory.
Fernando Acosta led the charge, collecting two hits, scoring three runs and driving in two while stealing two bases. Nick Serbio added two hits, a run and two RBIs as Mines reached double figures for the fourth time this fall.
The Orediggers again received a strong performance from their pitching staff. Sean Lann threw four innings without allowing an earned run, surrendering only three hits while striking out seven.
Tyler Mauldin followed with a dominant inning in relief, retiring CSU Pueblo without allowing a hit or an earned run and striking out two.
Between Williams, Guevara, Lann and Mauldin, the four highlighted Mines pitchers combined for 20 strikeouts across 12 innings while allowing just two earned runs.
The sweep marks another step forward for an Oredigger team that has continued to improve throughout its fall schedule. After going 0-1-1 against Colorado State and 1-2 at CU Boulder, Mines went unbeaten against CSU Pueblo and has now won three of its last four games.
Mines will have a weekend away from competition before returning to the road Oct. 17-18 for a three-game series against South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, South Dakota.
