Orediggers Earn Weekend Sweep Over Grand Canyon University

The Colorado School of Mines Men's Club Ice Hockey earned a hard-fought weekend sweep over Grand Canyon University, skating to a 6–3 victory on Friday night before clinching a 5–4 shootout win on Saturday at Edge Ice Arena.

Game 1 – Friday, Feb. 13

Colorado School of Mines 6, Grand Canyon University 3

Mines opened the series with a complete offensive performance, scoring six goals from six different skaters to secure the Friday night win.

Scott Macdonald got the Orediggers on the board late in the first period on the power play, finishing a feed from Nathan Cote and Brady Sorrentino. Mines took control in the second period with goals from Matthew Mansfield, Jerry Sharpe, and Brady Sorrentino, building a three-goal cushion. Sharpe scored his first goal of his collegiate career, a huge accomplishment. 

Jordan Larese added a key shorthanded goal early in the third period, and Nick Lombardi sealed the win with an empty-net tally in the final seconds.

Gage Oyler was strong in net, stopping 37 of 40 shots to earn the win.

Game 2 – Saturday, Feb. 14

Colorado School of Mines 5, Grand Canyon University 4 (Shootout)

Saturday's rematch was a back-and-forth battle that required a shootout to decide the winner. Nathan Cote opened the scoring for Mines in the first period, with Jordan Larese earning the assist.

Nicholas Lombardi delivered a standout performance, scoring a hat trick with goals in the second and third periods to keep Mines in front. Cote and Larese each added multiple assists, continuing their strong weekend.

After regulation and overtime ended tied, Cote scored the lone goal of the shootout to secure the victory for the Orediggers.

Gage Oyler again anchored the defense, making 35 saves through overtime and turning aside all Grand Canyon attempts in the shootout.
