LAST TIME OUT
Mines hosted UCCS as part of Rock the Lock last Thursday night. Despite a raucous home crowd, the Orediggers dropped a 72-70 heartbreaker to the Mountain Lions.
Sofia Baldessari led a trio of double-digit scorers for the home team, dropping a 31-point, 11-rebound double-double with two assists, two blocks, and two steals as well.
Quincey Baum and
Jenna Shandy combined to score 25 points too while Shandy handed out six assists. On Saturday, CSU Pueblo came to Golden for Alumni Weekend. The Orediggers bounced back and showed out for their alums with a 56-46 win. Another double-double from Baldessari featured 16 points and 11 rebounds. Shandy poured in 16 more points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Sophia Baal finished boasting 10 points and eight rebounds. The victory also gave Mines a regular-season sweep of the ThunderWolves after the Orediggers' come-from-behind win in Pueblo earlier this season.
SENIOR DUO
Two seniors will be recognized and celebrated by the Colorado School of Mines women's basketball team Tuesday night with
Jenna Shandy and
Quincey Baum as the proverbial guests of honor. Baum has been with the Orediggers since the 2020-21, COVID-19 impacted season. Her career numbers to date include 299 points, 252 rebounds, 119 assists, 70 steals, and 35 blocks with one double-double. Baum earned a bachelors' degree from Mines in mechanical engineering in May of 2024. She added a master's degree in engineering & technology management last May. The Littleton, Colo., native is currently pursuing a second master's degree in environment resource & energy policy. Shandy arrived at Mines for the 2021-22 season, but took a redshirt. Over the last four years, she has accumulated 1,329 points, 389 rebounds, 254 assists, 123 steals, and 19 blocks. The Valor Christian High School graduate also touts 483 career field goals and 190 career makes from long range. She's in the program record book for career scoring, assists, and made field goals. Shandy received her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering last May and is currently pursuing her master's degree in engineering & technology management.
POSTSEASON SCENARIOS
Six of eight available spots in the RMAC Tournament have already been claimed. Colorado Mesa has claimed the regular-season crown and the #1 seed. Adams State, UCCS, Black Hills State, Western Colorado, and MSU Denver are also locked into the bracket. Mines is battling for one of the last two spots with Fort Lewis, CSU Pueblo, New Mexico Highlands, and South Dakota Mines all mathematically in play. Two wins this week guarantee the Orediggers a postseason berth since Fort Lewis and CSU Pueblo have to play each other, thus one will take a loss. One win and one loss for Mines drops things into a myriad of tiebreaker scenarios. A two-loss week wouldn't mathematically end things for the Orediggers, but it would make things very difficult.
SCOUTING REGIS
Regis enters the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 1-20 and a conference record of 1-17. The Rangers' lone win of the year was at home against Westminster on Feb. 5. The final score was 80-52. Over the weekend, RU lost at home to Colorado Christian, 89-65, before losing on the road at UCCS, 83-64. Kate Gallery and Jessica Bollwahn are Regis' top two weapons. Gallery's game averages include 17.3 points and 5.0 rebounds. Bollwahn does it all with 11.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.4 steals, and nearly 1.0 blocks per game.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE RANGERS
Mines and Regis met in Denver earlier this season. The Orediggers won, 76-60.
Sofia Baldessari scored 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Emma Sixta went for 17 points, seven assists, three rebounds, and two steals.
Jade Leon chipped in 14 points, seven rebounds, and one steal. The victory improved Mines to 32-56 all-time against Regis. The Orediggers are 7-3 in their last 10 meetings with the Rangers and have won three straight against RU as well.
SCOUTING MSU DENVER
The women from MSU Denver have already clinched a spot in the RMAC Tournament thanks to a record of 14-12 (12-6 RMAC) thanks in large part to an active five-game winning streak. The Roadrunners' surge includes victories over Western Colorado, Chadron State, South Dakota Mines, CSU Pueblo, and Colorado Christian. Two of those five victories came by one point. Over the weekend, MSU Denver handed CSU Pueblo an 86-85 loss after trailing by 10 points halfway through the fourth quarter. The Roadrunners stayed hot at Colorado Christian and won 78-59. Individually, Mikylah Espinosa fuels MSU Denver's offense thanks to 17.7 points and 3.3 assists per game. Keira Mitchell is the defending RMAC Defensive Player of the Week. She's averaging 3.3 blocks per game and 7.1 rebounds per game. Nevaeh Millard and Jadyn Watts combine to average 23.4 points per game.
OREDIGGERS AGAINST THE ROADRUNNERS
Mines and MSU Denver played earlier this season in Golden, and the visitors ran past the Orediggers, 72-59. Despite the loss,
Sofia Baldessari still scored 30 points.
Emma Sixta and
Jade Leon grabbed 10 rebounds each. Additionally,
Quincey Baum handed out five assists with five rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. The loss for Mines moved the all-time series with MSU Denver to 56-35 in favor of the Roadrunners. Even so, the Orediggers hold an 8-2 record in their last 10 meetings with MSU Denver. In fact, Mines has won on the Roadrunners' home court three straight times dating back to 2023.
RECORD BOOK UPDATE
Multiple Orediggers have already edited the program record book this season.
Jenna Shandy has climbed to #4 on the all-time list for made three-pointers. She's also #7 in career scoring, #9 in career assists, and tied for #14 in single-season three-pointers.
Emma Sixta owns the #13 spot on the list for career three-pointers. Additionally,
Sofia Baldessari now has 525 points in her first season at Mines. That's more points than other player in their first season as an Oredigger since the year 2000. She's now #4 on the all-time, single-season scoring list. Baldessari is also tied for #14 in single-season three-pointers and is #6 in single-season free throws made. Furthermore, Baldessari broke the program's single-game scoring record with 45 points against Nelson and has four additional games of at least 30 points.
SOFIA BALDESSARI
In addition to overhauling Mines' record book,
Sofia Baldessari is making her name known across the RMAC. With two games to play in the regular season, Baldessari ranks #1 in the league in scoring thanks to 21.0 points per game. She's #3 in rebounding with 8.5 boards per game. The sophomore is also #1 in free-throw percentage, #5 in three-pointers per game, #8 in three-point percentage and #9 in field-goal percentage among qualifying players. Finally, despite missing the first three games of the season, Baldessari ranks #6 in the nation in points per game.
ROSTER RUNDOWN
The Orediggers' 2025-26 roster includes 11 players. Five are returners from Mines' 2024-25 squad. There are also two true freshmen and four transfers. Despite a large percentage of fresh faces, Head Coach
Brittany Simpson has her top-two scorers from last season and the two players with the most steals for the Orediggers in 2024-25.
THE VETERANS
Mines' returners include sophomores
Lindsey Jones and
Jade Leon, junior
Emma Sixta, and redshirt seniors
Jenna Shandy (née Siebert) and
Quincey Baum. Shandy and Sixta were the Orediggers' leading scorers in 2024-25, averaging 19.5 points and 10.5 points per game, respectively. The duo of Sixta and Shandy also combined for 78 steals last year. Baum, in her sixth year with the program, sat out her initial redshirt-senior campaign with an injury. Jones and Leon both provided big minutes off the bench and should see an expanded role in 2025-26.
MEET THE FRESHMEN
Olivia Campbell and
Sophia Baal are the two true freshmen for the Orediggers. Campbell played at Fruita Monument High School just west of Grand Junction, Colo. She averaged 15 points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals per game, and was First-Team All-Conference four times and Honorable Mention All-State three times. Baal, a graduate of Cherry Creek High School, also played club basketball for Hardwood Elite and competed in flag football. In fact, Baal helped represent CCHS and the state of Colorado at the NFL's 2025 Pro Bowl Games in Orlando, Fla., as the Cherry Creek flag football squad competed in the first-ever NFL Flag High School Girls Showcase. She was named the MVP at the NFL event.
TRANSFER QUARTET
Mines Head Coach
Brittany Simpson further bolstered her roster during the offseason with the addition of four transfers, as noted above.
Liv Loveland, a Castle Rock, Colo., native, came back to Colorado after playing one season at NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She played in six games for the Cougars including her collegiate debut against Murray State.
Madison Gage, a Legacy High School graduate, committed to the Orediggers following two seasons at Chaminade (DII) in Hawaii. Gage's time with the Swords included 155 points, 84 rebounds, 18 assists, 19 steals, and four blocks. She dropped 17 points on Evergreen State as a true freshman and decided to return to Colorado following a coaching change made by the Chaminade administration.
Emily Thomas, another Colorado product, returned to her home state after two seasons at RMAC foe South Dakota Mines. Following an injury-shortened freshman season and a coaching change after, Thomas arrives in Golden touting 103 points, 127 rebounds, 25 steals, eight blocks, and 77 assists. Rounding out the quartet is
Sofia Baldessari who graduated from Douglas County High School in Colorado before starting her post-prep career at College of Saint Benedict (DIII) in Minnesota. In 12 games as a true freshman, Baldessari collected 102 points, 77 rebounds, six assists, eight steals, and two blocks.
BOSS LADY
Head Coach
Brittany Simpson is in her 14th season leading the Mines women's basketball program. During her decade-plus tenure, she has become the winningest coach in program history both in terms of total wins and win percentage at 245-154 (.614). Simpson is responsible for all three of the program's RMAC titles including regular-season championships in 2015-16, 2020-21, and 2021-22. She has also led the Orediggers in five of their six trips to the NCAA tournament. Simpson is a three-time RMAC Coach of the Year who has guided 37 All-RMAC selections including 16 first-teamers, 11 second-teamers, one third-team selection and nine honorable mention performers.
