GUNNISON, Colo. - Colorado School of Mines crowned four champions among seven medalists overall on the opening day of the 2026 RMAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday.
Aidan Bennett took the men's pole vault,
Dawson Gunn captured the men's 5,000m title,
Lisa Sutherland prevailed in the pentathlon, and
Violet Williams won the women's long jump to lead a day full of Oredigger success at Western Colorado's Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
Franklin Rambo (shot put),
Cody Wyman (5K), and
Taylor Hindman (pole vault) also found their way onto the podium as bronze medalists in their events.
After the first day of action, the Mines men lead the team score with 46 points ahead of UCCS (26) and CSU Pueblo (22); the women are second with 33 behind UCCS (65) but ahead of CSU Pueblo (26).
Bennett started the day with his win in the pole vault, clearing a career-best 5.15m. Importantly, that moves him up on the national performance list to a tie for 12th out of a three-way tie for 13th.
Kellar Cimini scored in fourth place for Mines with a 4.78m bar, and both
Kai Miller and Tony Peonio made it over 4.48m for ninth and 11th, respectively. The women's event saw Hindman lead the Orediggers with a bronze-medal 3.57m bar as
Arabella Chen was eighth at 3.42m and
Madeline Obuchowski 11th with a 3.27m clearance.
Sutherland continued Mines' legacy of strong multi-event performances with gold in the women's pentathlon, compiling 3,485 points to win by more than 150 over the field. Sutherland scored a massive 941 points thanks to an 8.85-second 60m hurdles performance, then got over 1.52m in the high jump (644 points), threw 10.70m in the shot put (575), and jumped 5.37m (663) in the long jump to take the lead. Her 800m was a personal-best 2:32.47 to add 662 points and the overall win.
The Oredigger men took 20 team points from the 5,000m topped by Gunn, whose 14.52.75 time converts to one of the top times in the nation. Wyman hit a personal-best and NCAA-provisional 14:59.06 for third, and
Ethan Grolnic ran fifth in 15:07.24 with
Braden Struhs 13th in 15:42.89. The women also scored three in their race led by
Gabi Boeckman's fifth-place 18:25.59, with
Josie Mejia seventh in 18:27.44 and
Callen Nash eighth in 18:39.85.
Williams capped the night with a 5.95m best attempt in the long jump to win her first career RMAC title. Already assured of finals with an opening attempt of 5.78m, Williams hit 5.95m on her third attempt to outclass the field for gold. In the men's long jump,
Zander Besch (6.40m) and
Thierry Asare (6.30m) were 14th and 15th, respectively.
Rambo was the shot put bronze medalist with his top throw of 16.73m, and
Keaton Reiman grabbed ninth at 15.90m with
Jonah Pfender 12th in his RMACs debut at 15.21m.
Through four events in the men's heptathlon,
Nick Stade sits fifth at 2,652 points. Stade's day was highlighted by a 7.14-second 60m dash and a 1.85m high jump clearance.
In track prelims, Mines pushed three freshmen through to the men's 60m hurdles final with
Dominik Davis (8.11),
Mason Znamenacek (8.27), and
Cooper McGinnis (8.29) all qualifying.
Jathan Busby ran 6.81 seconds to advance to the 60m dash final, and Williams ran her personal-best of 7.60 seconds in the women's prelims to move through.
Aani Hardesty qualified fifth in the women's 400m in 57.76 seconds.
Tegan Daughters finished 16th in the 200m dash (22.55), and
Elijah Quinby 12th in the 400m (50.10).
Elizabeth Prescott was 11th in the women's 400m prelims in 59.38.
Only one relay was on the track Friday as the men's distance medley of
Curtis Smela,
Ty Krafft,
Owen Schneider, and
Chris Pietrak put together a fourth-place time of 10:15.37.
The final day of the meet begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
