GOLDEN, Colo. – Sunday's series finale between the Colorado School of Mines baseball team and Regis was a 33-run contest that went to the Rangers, 24-9, in seven innings.
Jackson Babcock and
Evan Bilter were the big bats for Mines (0-9). Babcock scored two runs and notched two RBI as part of a three-hit day which included a double. Bilter was 2-for-3 with a double at the plate.
Tyler Pina and
Justin Kubojiri each scored twice.
Keyan Lundvall matched Babcock's two RBI.
Alex Dunagan's double rounded out the extra-base hits for the Orediggers. Meanwhile, Regis (5-3) collected three doubles and two home runs.
Alex Piscotty (0-2) was Mines' starting pitcher and the pitcher of decision. Belcher (2-0) started for RU and claimed the win in the run-rule game. Brand Schaff,
Matt Potter,
Tai Nguyen,
Cade Burghardt,
Kenji Bray, and
Jackson Kay accounted for the Orediggers' innings of relief. In the field, five errors by the home team were key in the final score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mines fell into an early, 8-0 deficit. But the Orediggers did not give up and showed some pluck at the plate. Leiphart drove in Dunagan in the home half of the second inning to break the ice. The third saw Lundvall plated Babcock and Pina returned the favor to Lundvall, making three unanswered runs for Mines. Regis scored on more in the top of the fourth before another crooked number by the Orediggers in the same inning. This time,
Alex Freund hit a single which brought Kubjiri across the plate. Then, Lundvall brought in Babcock – again. After five complete innings, Regis' 8-0 initial 8-0 lead had been cut to 9-5.
The fifth inning brought offensive fireworks which resulted in four Ranger runs and a trio of runs for Mines. Kubojiri and Babcock accounted for the home RBI while Pina, Freund, and Kubojiri all rounded the bases. A wild pitch in the sixth inning brought the margin back to four runs. Unfortunately for the Orediggers, Regis stacked 11 runs in the top of the seventh and the home bats had no answer after the stretch. That brought the game to an early end due to a 12-run mercy rule.
