VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -
Dawson Gunn and Emily LaMena medaled in the 5,000m among five podium performances for Colorado School of Mines in the first day of the 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Mines put three women on the 5K podium - LaMena, Grace Strongman, and Sierra Wall - while Gunn and Paul Knight found themselves there after the men's race to highlight a successful Friday for the Orediggers, who also maximized their opportunities in prelims to set up an exciting Saturday.

With five events scored, the Mines women are fifth with 13 team points, and the men sit seventh with 12 points.

LaMena and Strongman finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women's 5K as they paced the opening third of the race before having to chase down two breakaways up front. LaMena ultimately crossed in 16:18.93, while Strongman was a spot behind in 16:20.89. Freshman Sierra Wall, in her nationals debut, closed strongly to move onto the podium in a seventh-place 16:23.67, while Lexi Herr moved from 12th to ninth over the final kilometer in 16:34.39 and Margaux Basart finished 11th in 16:40.12. LaMena, Strongman, and Wall earned First-Team All-America honors with Herr and Basart second-team status.

Gunn and Knight controlled the early pace in a men's 5K that largely stayed together throughout, and Gunn made a move with four laps to go to put himself back on the front. It came down to a sprint to the finish with Wingate's Luca Poppe, who tipped Gunn by a half-second as the Oredigger finished in a career-best 13:47.70. Knight closed a strong fifth in 13:50.77 to stand on the podium for the first time in the event indoors. Both men are First-Team All-Americans.

The men's distance medley relay was the only other track final on Friday as Max Bonenberger, Tim Thompson, Liam Currie, and Brock Drengenberg finished ninth in 9:55.06, a Second-Team All-America performance.

All four of Mines' entrants in track preliminaries moved through to Saturday finals with their performances. Jonah Fallon ran a controlling 46.61 to win his heat and advance on time in the 400m, qualifying third overall. Tim Thompson moved through on placing in his men's 800m heat, coming in second in an easy 1:50.08, while Imani Fernandez-Gorbea had to do it on time as she snagged the final spot in the women's 800m final in 2:09.46. In the men's mile, Brock Drengenberg moved through on time, qualifying eighth in 4:06.92 benefiting from the faster of the two heats.

In the field, Jennifer Jarnagin made finals and finished ninth in the women's weight throw, tossing 18.89m on her third attempt to earn Second-Team All-America honors. Violet Williams, in her NCAA debut, finished 17th in the long jump with a best leap of 5.68m. Aidan Bennett suffered an unlucky no height in the pole vault going out at 4.86m.

The Orediggers will complete the meet Saturday starting at 4:40 p.m. ET with the mile final.
