VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Colorado School of Mines earned five more podium finishes as both the men's and women's teams closed in ninth place at the 2026 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Grace Strongman earned her second All-America finish of the meet in the 3,000m,
Tim Thompson and
Imani Fernandez-Gorbea earned 800m spots,
Jonah Fallon podiumed in the 400m, and
Brock Drengenberg made it in the mile.
The Oredigger men scored 21 points and the women 19 as each ended up in ninth place; for the women, it marked their second-best team finish ever trailing a tie for eighth the last time the meet was held in Virginia Beach, 2022, and for the men it's a second consecutive top-10 showing.
After the meet,
Margaux Basart was named the NCAA Elite Scholar-Athlete for having the highest GPA among competitors at the meet; the Mines graduate student has a 4.0 GPA majoring in quantum engineering, and has a bachelor's degree in engineering physics from Mines.
Drengenberg started the Orediggers' day on the track but had to wait the longest to find out if he would make the podium after a lengthy review resulted in a disqualification that elevated Drengenberg from ninth to eighth. In a close and physical race, he ran 4:13.11 to earn his first individual honor after finishing fifth with the DMR a year ago.
Fallon won the opening heat of the 400m final and ended up fifth in 46.54, his third-best career time, to become Mines' first-ever 400m all-American indoors or out. It also marks Fallon's second First-Team All-America finish with his DMR trophy from last year.
Thompson took control of the men's 800m at the halfway point of the race, going out in 51.82 through 400 but being caught on the final lap to close fifth in 1:49.31. In the women's race, Fernandez-Gorbea stayed with the two front-runners as long as she could through 600 meters, and ended seventh in 2:08.53.
Four of the five women who contested Friday night's 5,000m ran in the 3,000m for Mines with Strongman, fourth last night, taking fifth in a new Mines-record 9:22.04 for her third all-America trophy of the season combined with cross country season.
Emily LaMena (9:25.30, #2 all-time at Mines),
Margaux Basart (9:29.33, #4 all-time), and
Sierra Wall (9:32.44, #7 all-time) finished ninth, tenth, and 11th for Second-Team All-America status.
Paul Knight, a day after finishing fifth in the 5K, ended up 13th in the 3,000m in 8:10.09 for his own Second-Team All-America finish.
Pittsburg State won both team titles with Grand Valley State the men's runners-up and West Texas A&M second for the women.Â
