Orediggers Battle Defending Champions on the Road

The Colorado School of Mines Men's Club Lacrosse traveled north to face a major challenge on Sunday morning, falling 18–3 to Montana State University Men's Lacrosse on March 15 in Bozeman, Montana.

Facing the defending national champions, currently ranked sixth in the country, the Orediggers entered the matchup knowing they would be tested in nearly every phase of the game. Difficult playing conditions added another layer of challenge, with temperatures hovering around 15 degrees at the opening faceoff and snow covering portions of the field.

Despite the final score, Mines showed resilience on the defensive end throughout the contest. The Orediggers' settled defense and man-down units performed well against one of the nation's top offenses, communicating effectively and limiting opportunities in key situations. The defensive effort kept the team competing against a high-powered Montana State attack.

At the faceoff X, Mines faced a difficult matchup against a physical Bobcats specialist and aggressive wing play, making it difficult to generate consistent possessions. As a result, offensive opportunities came at a premium for the Orediggers.

When chances did arise, Mines capitalized on fast break situations, converting several transition opportunities to put goals on the board. However, against Montana State's structured defense, creating opportunities in settled offensive sets proved challenging.

While the result favored the defending champions, the game provided valuable experience for the Orediggers against one of the strongest programs in the country. The team continues to build chemistry and identify areas of growth as the season progresses.

Mines now turns its attention to the upcoming portion of its schedule, with two games ahead before spring break as the Orediggers look to apply the lessons learned from their trip to Montana.
