The Colorado School of Mines Men's Club Lacrosse faced a challenging two-game stretch over March 20–21, dropping matchups against MSU Denver Men's Lacrosse and Washington University in St. Louis Men's Lacrosse while competing with limited roster availability.
Friday vs. MSU Denver
Mines opened the weekend on Friday night with a 16–6 loss to MSU Denver. Playing with a shortened bench heading into spring break, the Orediggers showed flashes of strong play, particularly on the defensive end in settled six-on-six situations.
Despite solid structure defensively, transition play proved to be the difference. MSU Denver capitalized on multiple fast break opportunities, converting them into key goals that created separation. Offensively, Mines struggled to find rhythm early, but showed improvement late in the game as they began generating more consistent scoring chances.
Saturday vs. Washington University
The Orediggers returned to the field Saturday morning against Washington University, again facing depth challenges and ultimately falling 16–6.
Similar to Friday's contest, Mines' defense held firm in settled situations, demonstrating strong communication and positioning. However, penalties proved costly, as Washington University took advantage of multiple man-up opportunities. Fast break goals once again played a major role in the outcome.
Offensively, Mines experienced another slow start but found better flow as the game progressed. By the time the Orediggers began to generate consistent looks, the deficit had grown too large to overcome.
Looking Ahead
While the results were not what Mines had hoped for, the weekend provided valuable insight into areas for growth—particularly in transition defense, discipline, and early-game offensive execution. With a return to full numbers following spring break, the Orediggers will look to build on their strong settled defense and carry late-game offensive momentum into upcoming matchups.
