COLORADO SPRINGS - Colorado School of Mines was well-represented on the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's season-end awards for indoor track & field, earning three major awards and 26 all-RMAC spots.
Matt Sparks was named the RMAC Men's Coach of the Year,
Dawson Gunn was the Men's Track Athlete of the Year, and
Violet Williams earned the Women's Freshman of the Year award to lead the Orediggers.
Sparks guided the Mines men to second place at the RMAC Championships and ninth at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the Orediggers' second consecutive top-10 finish. Mines' 10 combined individual podium finishers at NCAAs marked its most indoors since 2021. In his 13th season, Sparks has been named the RMAC Men's Indoor Coach of the Year four times and earns his ninth honor overall.
Gunn won the RMAC 5,000m title and was the national silver medalist at the same distance, earning USTFCCCA First-Team All-America status. Gunn ran away with the RMAC 5K title in 14:52.75 at elevation, then ran a career-best 13:47.70 to finish second at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Williams, who was also the Freshman of the Meet at the RMAC Championships, captured conference titles in the long jump and 4x400 relay in addition to scoring in the 60m dash. In her debut season, Williams set the Mines record in the long jump (6.21m) and qualified for the NCAA Championships while also running the #2 performances all-time in the 60m (7.60) and 200m (24.98).
All-RMAC awards are based on finishes at the conference championship, with medalists (and first-place relays) earning first-team honors and finishers four through six (and second-place relays) second-team spots. The major awards are voted on by the RMAC's head coaches.
