DENVER, Colo. – Mines baseball staved off Regis' late rally Sunday afternoon as part of a 14-13 victory and a series win for the Orediggers.
On offense,
Tyler Pina and
Brody Duvall both came one hit shy of hitting for the cycle. Pina went 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBI thanks to two singles, a double, and one home run. Duvall was 4-for-6 including two singles, one double, and a triple while scoring twice and riving in one.
Tyler Easter,
Jackson Babcock, and
Joe Reitz also produced two-hit days, respectively. Babcock's multi-hit performance featured a double and a triple with two runs and two RBI.
Alex Dunagan added a double as well while scoring twice and notching one RBI. Easter finished touting three runs and a stolen base.
Nicholas Spidel started on the mound and provided 2.0 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on six hits with zero walks.
Kenji Bray (2-1) earned the win thanks to his 4.0 innings of relief which included six runs on four hits with two hits and one hit batter.
Matthew Turner added 2.1 innings of three-run, three-hit relief.
Tai Nguyen (1) finished the gritty effort by recording two flawless outs to finish the game.
Mines (15-23, 12-12 RMAC) batted .395 as a team thanks to 17 hits across nine innings of action. Regis (14-23-1, 5-14-1 RMAC) posted a .333 clip at the plate after collecting 13 hits. The Orediggers widened the gap at the plate by slugging .651 with four doubles, two triples, and one home run. The Rangers only managed a .462 slugging percentage on two doubles and one home run. Mines' production on offense offset four errors in the field. One error for RU couldn't overcome a staff ERA of 14.00 even with seven strikeouts compared to five walks. The Oredigger arms fanned four and waked four.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two hits of the entire game were Duvall's triple and Dunagan's double. Those sparked an opening frame which featured six Oredigger runs on six hits with zero errors. Babcock and Pina both doubled as part of the surge. Despite sprinkling three runs across the first two innings, Regis found itself staring at a 9-3 deficit after four full innings. Then, a Babcock triple and Pina's two-run home run in the top of the sixth made the score 12-3 in favor of Mines. Six RU runs in the bottom of the sixth cut into the Orediggers' cushion significantly. However, a two-run single off the bat of
Evan Bilter in the top of the seventh softened the blow and made the score 14-9. The Rangers didn't give up, scoring a trio after the stretch and one more in the bottom of the ninth. Nguyen's emergence from the bullpen was all Mines needed. He worked a three-pitch out and then struck out the last batter on five pitches and closed out the victory.
