Mines Splits Friday Twin Bill with CCU

GOLDEN, Colo. – The Colorado School of Mines baseball team split its Friday doubleheader against Colorado Christian, bouncing back from a 20-0 loss in game one to take a 9-6 win in game two at Jim Darden Field.

Brody Duvall accounted for most of the home team's offense with three runs and three RBI across the two games. He batted .333 on the day thanks to two hits including one home run. Justin Kubojiri was most efficient at the plate for Mines, hitting .500 thanks to a single and a triple on the way to two runs and one RBI. Jackson Babcock churned out three hits and three RBI with a double. Ben Leiphart's two runs and a double rounded out the highlights on offense. The defense saw Alex Honeyman (4-4) start game one and take the loss. Matthew Turner started game two but didn't play a part in the decision. Kenji Bray (3-1) earned the win in relief after spinning 4.0 innings of one-run, four-hit relief featuring three strikeouts and zero walks. Brandon Schaff (3) claimed a save after providing a flawless seventh frame. Nicholas Spidel, Grady Booth, Cade Burghardt, and Luke Parker added innings of relief as well.

Mines (16-28, 13-17 RMAC) clinched a spot in the RMAC Tournament thanks to its win in game two on Friday, combined with other results around the league. The Orediggers managed a 1-1 record to start the series despite hitting just .188 as a team. Two doubles, one triple, and one home run helped the home team slug .333 while committing just two defensive errors. Colorado Christian combined for a .403 batting average and a .776 slugging percentage after totaling four doubles and seven home runs. Four errors in the field dampened CCU's hopes of going 2-0. Zachary Hill was the Cougars' winning pitcher after providing a complete-game shutout and surrendering just two hits in the opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Friday's first game was a highlight reel for Colorado Christian and forgettable for the home team. The Cougars hit five home runs and four doubles. Hill carried a no-hitter into the fourth inning before a pair of errors and Dunagan's bouncing single ended CCU's hopes of history. Kubojiri's single in the sixth went to left field and that marked all the offense for Mines. Colorado Christian collected two runs in the first inning, six in the second, five in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth for the final tally. Spidel's work on the mound provided the Orediggers a zero on the scoreboard in the third inning. Burghardt nearly tossed an immaculate inning in the seventh, needing just nine pitches for three outs with two strikeouts.

Mines struck first in game two thanks to a first-inning double off the bat of Babcock which brought in Duvall. However, a Colorado Christian grand slam in the second inning put the Orediggers in a 5-1 deficit. The home team immediately responded with four runs on one hit and the help of one error in the second inning. Leiphart worked a leadoff walk, Tyler Hummel was hit by a pitch, and Kubojiri's sacrifice attempt ended with him on base after an error. With the bases loaded, Duvall wore a pitch for the first run in the bottom of the second frame. Babcock laced a two-run double right after and made the score 5-4. Dunagan's sacrifice fly plated Duvall and tied the game 5-5. Then, in the third inning, Mines retook the lead and didn't look back. The three-run frame was fueled by a Leiphart double, Kubojiri triple, and Duvall's two-run home run. A CCU error in the fourth inning brought Tyler Easter around to score for a 9-5 lead. The Cougars' solo home run in the sixth inning proved academic after Parker got the final out and Schaff proved untouchable in the final stanza.
