AZUSA, Calif. and COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A big night by Colorado School of Mines' 800m squad highlighted the first day of the Franson Last Chance meet at Azusa Pacific on Friday.

Imani Fernandez-Gorbea shattered her own program record in the 800 while Liam Currie likely ran himself into the NCAA Championships with a huge career-best to lead a number of Oredigger competitors in action on the final weekend of qualifying before the national meet.

Fernandez-Gorbea was the top collegian in the women's 800m competition with a blistering 2:05.70, which improves her to fourth on the national performance list as she bettered her 2:06.51 time run earlier this season at Georgia. The RMAC champion has now run three of the top four times in program history this season.

Currie, who came into the weekend three spots off the bubble for qualifying for the national field at 1:49.16, broke out with a huge improvement of 1:48.41, lifting him into the NCAA D-II top 15 and likely securing his ticket to Emporia State. It would give the Mines men three entrants in the half-mile at NCAAs as Tim Thompson - who ran a 1:48.84 on Friday - and Brock Drengenberg both already rank in the top 10.

Violet Williams doubled up on Friday, running the #9 100m dash time in program history with a 12.06-second showing after marking 5.81m in the long jump. Lisa Sutherland turned in 5.46m in her long jump series, and Jennifer Jarnagin, already safely qualified for nationals, had a 54.72m best to win the hammer throw.

Closer to home at the Air Force Twilight in Colorado Springs, a trio of Mines vaulters competed as Aidan Bennett cleared 4.75m and Kai Miller 4.60m in the men's competition, and Taylor Hindman was over 3.63m in the women's event.

Mines wraps up the regular season Saturday with five events - the men's 400m dash, men's and women's 400m hurdles, and men's and women's 4x400 relays - at Azusa Pacific.
