NEW ORLEANS - Postseason honors continue to roll in for Colorado School of Mines following the outdoor track & field season as the USTFCCCA has announced its all-America and all-region honors.
National champion
Emily LaMena has been named the USTFCCCA's Regional Track Athlete of the Year while
Scott Van Sickle picked up Regional Men's Assistant Coach of the Year honors, and the organization made its all-America and all-region honors official with a dozen Orediggers represented on the all-America squads and 29 on the all-region teams.
LaMena was a double-medalist at the recently-complete NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, winning the national title in the 3,000m steeplechase and finishing as runner-up in the 5,000m. LaMena's 18 points were the most by a South Central athlete and contributed heavily to Mines' third-place team finish, their best ever. Last week, LaMena was also named the RMAC Co-Track Athlete of the Year.
Van Sickle, coaches the Orediggers' middle-distance squad, earns the men's assistant coach of the year award after qualifying four men and a relay to the NCAA Championships. Mines sent 400m standout
Jonah Fallon plus 800m runners
Tim Thompson,
Brock Drengenberg, and
Liam Currie, 400m hurdler
Elijah Quinby, and the Orediggers qualified their 4x400 relay for the first time since 2002. Mines won the RMAC titles in the 400m (Fallon), 800m (Thompson), and the 4x400, and set the RMAC all-competitions and championships records in the relay.
First-Team All-America honors were made official for the top eight finishers at nationals led by LaMena (steeplechase/5,000m) and 5K national champion
Grace Strongman, along with national silver medalists
Max Bonenberger (steeplechase),
Dawson Gunn (5,000m),
Paul Knight (10,000m), and
Sierra Wall (steeplechase) along with
Jennifer Jarnagin (hammer throw) and
Braden Struhs (10,000m). Second-Team All-RMAC honors went to finishers 9-16 in their events and included
Daniel Appleford (5,000m),
Liam Currie (800m), and
Jeremiah Vaille (10,000m).
